Patient Charting for Plastic Surgery Medical Spa Estheticians

Free downloads and more information for medical estheticians is available at Medical Spa MD, a fast growing community of Plastic Surgeons, Dermatologists and Aesthetic Physicians with 2,000+ Physician Members worldwide.
Estheticians coming from the traditional day spa industry into the medical spa environment have to learn and understand an entirely new way of documenting information as a 'client' transforms into a 'patient'. New Medical Aestheticians who in the past only needed to be able to simply stamp a time and date on treatment forms with occasional side notes, are now expected to correctly chart anything that happens during every patient interaction. In addition to patient charting comes new medical treatment consent forms, HIPPA Forms, photography consent forms, anatomical charting forms, and others. Medical Estheticians who have contact with a patient as any part of their treatment, should be charting everything from follow-up phone calls, to letters mailed, to topical treatments used and the patient's response, to laser settings and the patient's response, patch tests, follow up appointments, and patient's tolerances to therapies. The once client file has now transformed into a medical record by all standards which could stand up in a court of law. Some aestheticians I have spoken with have not learned the art of charting and feel they should not be required to do so. Why is it so important you ask? Unfortunately, there have been more horror stories hitting the media than stories of healing and hope, especially when it comes to therapies that involve lasers. These unfortunate circumstances are a catalyst of change to laser laws across the U.S. Whether the MD is on site or off, they (along with the therapist) can be held liable for any legal implications filed by a patient at the hands of a clinician or aesthetician. Harsh as it may seem, and it has even happened to our practice, even the most skilled and brilliant esthetician could be terminated if they refuse to properly chart and document a patient's care. The rule of thumb is just this... if you didn't chart it, it didn't happen. If you're a medical esthetician performing medical treatments it's up to you to know what your medical spas requirements are around patient charting and what potential problems exist if you fail to live up to these new requirements.

Plastic Surgery Marketing: 6 Ways To Use Real Patient Testimonials

Medical Spa Marketing: 6 Ways To Use Real Patient Testimonials Real patient testimonials for your medical spa, plastic surgery clinic, or cosmetic dermatology practice, third-party endorsements, media coverage these can all differentiate your cosmetic clinic, improve your professional image, and convince potential patients to initiate contact. While search engine optimization (SEO), pay per click (ppc) and direct mail can put your practice in front of potential patients, third party patient testimonials can provide the needed level of 'trust building'.. Medical spas, plastic surgeons, and cosmetic dermatologists usually utilize one of three types of third party validation: Existing Real Patient Testimonials: (You've seen this if you're not already doing it.) Prominent display of your patients saying nice things about you. Most of these are either not real, or they're anonymous, diminishing their effectiveness. Trust Through Association: The reason that you'll put your FACS, ASAPS, AAD, or ASDS logo on your site is to build patient trust. It works. Of course, these associations are completely restricted and very protective of their turf, leading to less restrictive medical associations who want to gain credibility. The reason MAPA was formed was to add some legitimacy to a group of non-core physicians. These associations are always pay to play. Third Party Endorsements & Validations: The Botox 'diamond level injector is an example of third party endorsement as are others that are run by medical service companies to try to help their customers. (If Medical Spa MD links to your site it's also a third party endorsement.) Interestingly, third party endorsements actually have a more favorable impact on the web than association endorsements since the third party is often more 'relevant' to the information that a potential patient is interested in. These kinds of accolades or promotions from prominent third-party players can be valuable, it validates your practice and provides a level of instant comfort that you've already been checked out by someone who knows. Small changes in the way you're handling your patient testimonials and third party endorsements can produce dramatic effects for your medical spa or cosmetic practice, especially online, where the vast majority of patients are now searching for information before first contact. Medical Spa MD: Quick strategies for piling up and using patient endorsements Target the places your patients already are: First and most importantly is your existing medical spa or cosmetic practice but you'll be able to reach far out into the community and gain the endorsements of other prominent businesses and individuals. Next, identify third-party recognition programs from high profile physician-respected sites like MedicalSpaMD.com. These are most often paid inclusion but there are ways to get these types of third party endorsements for free, or at a greatly reduced cost. Prepare good legal and media write-ups in advance: Media only runs two types of stories in cosmetic medicine; we found something that's fantastic and, we found out something we thought was fantastic, but now we found out that it doesn't work or it's dangerous. Uncover the ways you need to build these kinds of marketing materials so that you can use them on your own site. Provide ready-made strong human interest and strong visuals: Patients and the media love photos. If your fractional laser resurfacing before and after pictures suck, you're losing traffic and paying patients. Learn how to manage your photos and make them more than just snapshots. Make sure patient testimonials receive prominent placement: Have your patients smiling photo, real name, and a stellar testimonial. Beg, borrow or steal to get these. (Many patients won't want to be identified but some won't care. These are NOT in the before and after section.) Learn how to get patient testimonials that are truthful, candid, and impressive. Look for latent patient traffic, not spikes, from these techniques: The effective use of third party endorsements and patient testimonials work and drive patient flow, but it's not a technique that provides an instant boost. It's begins a trend and compounds over time.
Download your Free Report on Marketing Patient Testimonials For Plastic Surgeons at Medical Spa MD a growing association of Plastic Surgeons, Dermatologists and Aesthetic Physicians with more than 2,000 Physician Members worldwide.
If you're not yet using real patient testimonials and prominent third party endorsements to drive patient flow, start now, your medial spa, cosmetic dermatology clinic, or plastic surgery practice will thank you.

Acne Causes and Treatments

By Dan da Silva

Acne is an extremely prevalent skin condition affecting many people globally but does not just affect the young. In fact nearly 90 percent of people suffer from acne sometime in their lifetime and while acne is dreaded, it usually shows up during our teenage years and fortunately, many people outgrow it.

While the naturally occurring oil we produce called sebum does in fact clog the hair follicles, it is not the only substance to blame for the condition of acne and neither is oily skin either. The oil clogged inside the pore, not on the outside of the skin is what makes a pimple although acne is more of a contemporary problem and not a condition people in the past generally had to worry about.

Among the many causes of clogged pores are the use of makeup, everyday air particles and often a simple case of hormonal changes but while acne is a part of life for many individuals, it can be effectively treated. Many other factors contribute to the formation of acne and some debate that diet impacts the formation of acne, caused by reprocessed foods, junk foods, and sugars this contemporary society eats every day.

For a recurring or severe case of acne, many sufferers turn to a dermatologist for a more aggressive treatment and in most cases, a prescribed routine and medication can help to treat acne. Usually, follow-up visits will be necessary to that the acne is being cured without further intervention being required. The fingernails are the acne sufferer's biggest problem as bacteria can cause further infection of the already sensitive area so it is important that the acne is not aggravated any further.

This means that fingernails need to be kept clean and not dismissed because they look clean as almost all bacteria and germs are invisible to the naked human eye. To be on the safe side it is always wiser for an acne victim not to touch any of their pimples with their hands just in case.

As very few people have completely blemish free skin, there is a good chance that if you haven't had acne that you may well experience it at some stage especially if your parents suffered with it as well. The most likely scenario is that you will contact acne while you are young probably around puberty.

Acne can cause emotional problems for sufferers, especially when they are young so it is advisable that the opinion of a dermatologist be sought for further treatment. If you are unsure about you own situation then contact your local dermatologist of family physician as the information provided here is for guidance only and not a replacement for the opinion of a medical professional.

Fitness Infos - Weight Loss Tips

By Marc Bauer

Are you looking to lose weight to improve your appearance, your health, or even both? If you are, you may be looking for advice. The good news is that there are a number of tips that you can use to help you successfully lose weight and hopefully achieve your weight loss goal.

Eating healthy involves watching the foods that you eat, not necessarily how much food you eat. Of course, you may want to restrict the amount of foods that you eat, when on a diet, but it is more important to focus on the foods that you do eat. For instance, if you were to eat fruit instead of chips, you could have more fruit snacks with your meals than you would be able to if you were just to eat junk food.

Since eating healthy is an important component of losing weight, you may be wondering how you can go about doing so. One of the first things that you should do is find and familiarize yourself with healthy meals. You can do this by way of standard internet search or by buying a collection of healthy eating recipe books. To reduce the boredom often associated with healthy eating, especially if you are not use to it, it is important that you ?spice,? up your foods and try to not eat the same meals over and over again each week.

If you are looking to lose weight, you should start an exercise plan for yourself. Exercise is important as it burns off calories. When you burn calories, the amount of calories that your body absorbs decreases. This is, essentially, what makes it possible for you to lose weight. If you haven?t been exercising regularly in the past, it is important that you take it slow. Exercise is a great way to lose weight, but you do not want to overdo it, especially at first.

One of the many ways that you can go about finding exercises or workouts to do is by buying a collection of fitness magazines. Many fitness magazines have detailed exercises outlined in them, often accompanied by pictures. You may also be able to find free instructional workout videos or exercise moves online. As a reminder, it is important to start out slow or at least start with exercises that would be easy for you to.

Eating healthy and regular exercise are both important components of losing weight, but there are additional tips that you can use to help you lose weight. One of those tips involves finding a workout partner or a workout buddy. This is a mortal who can exercise with you, whether your exercise involves visiting a local gym or just going for a achievement at a local shopping center. Having a workout partner may help to keep you motivated and it may help to keep exercising and losing weight fun and exciting for you.

As previously mentioned, you can use the internet or fitness magazines to find workouts for you to do at home. To help reduce the boredom often associated with exercising you will want to change up your exercises, often on a daily basis. For instance, one day you may want to use a treadmill, the next day you may want to lift weights, and the next day you may want to do an exercise DVD, and so forth.

You should also consider making exercise and healthy intake logs or journals for yourself. These items can be used to track your progress. If you have a good week, like one where you completed all of your exercises, you may want to think about rewarding yourself. Your reward doesn?t have to include food; it can be something as simple as a sticker or treating yourself to a movie. Journals and logs have been known to help many individuals looking to lose weight and it may be healthy to do the same for you.

Plastic Surgery Medical Spas: Starlux 2940

Starlux 2940: Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing Technologies by John L. Jeghelian Cosmetic dermatology, plastic surgeons, medical spas and their patients will be hearing more and more about fractional skin resurfacing technologies like ActiveFX, DeepFX, Starlux 1540, Starlux 2940, Fraxel Repair. A small bit of history surrounding fractional laser treatments and C02 laser ablation treatments provide a place to start when looking at what's here in cosmetic medicine regarding fractional treatments, and what's coming next. Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing History Fraxel was the first non ablative fractional laser for the cosmetic medical market. From the beginning it's been upgraded and has been improved on by a number of other competing fractional laser skin resurfacing technologies including the DeepFX and ActiveFX from Lumenis, the Starlux 1540, and Starlux 2940 from Palomar Medical. Fractional laser skin resurfacing is new area of medicine that intersects cosmetic dermatology and traditional plastic surgery. Rapid advancements and new breakthroughs in these types of cosmetic medical technologies are occurring frequently and are fueled by an aging population of patients. The benefit for these patients is a rapid increase in the effectiveness of fractional laser treatments and less down time and potential side effects. Fractional laser technologies new cosmetic applications are expanding into related areas like skin tightening treatments, where fractional treatments compete with radio frequency (RF) treatments like Thermage, and will eventually move into fat and cellulite treatments and removal. The revolutionary cosmetic medical advance in 1995, full face CO2 Laser Resurfacing to treat wrinkles using the Ultra pulse CO2 laser, now relates poorly when faced with the new fractional laser technologies and although the wrinkle removal results for the time were fantastic, CO2 laser resurfacing created a very traumatic "burn wound" that literally vaporized the top layers of the skin that took many months of recovery in addition to the need for general anesthesia and the extra problem of the skin turning white with hypo pigmentation as the pigment cells were destroyed. Because of the side effects, few patients choose this procedure. The Newest Fractional Skin Resurfacing & Rejuvenation Technologies Now, cosmetic Fractional Skin Rejuvenation or Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing has evolved and eliminated many of the previous technologies shortcomings. The new erbium lasers are 'fractionated' into tiny micro-lasers, treating only a small portion of the skin (think tiny pin pricks) and leaving surrounding skin completely intact, greatly improving healing times. These 'fractionated' treatment areas are referred to as micro-treatment zones and cause just enough injury to the layers of the dermis to trigger new collagen production and stimulate the replacement of collagen damaged by aging and sun exposure. This production of new collagen 'fills in' or 'plumps' the underlying dermal tissues and smoothes wrinkles. The surrounding, untreated skin speeds the healing process to a mere 3-4 days. Since most of the pigment cells remain intact, hypo pigmentation is effectively prevented. Palomars Starlux Fractional Non-Ablative Laser Resurfacing The Fraxel and Starlux 1540 are new non-ablative lasers (ablate means to "surgically remove) which means that the skin is not removed by the laser. Instead, the laser instantly heats the skin, causing new collagen growth. Results for wrinkle removal and skin tightening are less dramatic than with ablative lasers, but the benefit of reduced recovery time and fewer side effects are mean that non ablative laser treatments are often the patients first choice. Starlux 2940: Fractional Ablative Laser Resurfacings Future Starlux 2940 fractional ablative lasers now provide the benefits of fractional treatments (less down time and reduced complications) with ablative skin resurfacings benefits (better wrinkle removal and facial rejuvenation) offering patients the best of both worlds. These newer fractional ablative lasers remove tissue in the micro treatment zone instead of just heating the dermis like the old Fraxel or Starlux 1540. The benefit of this new fractional laser ablation is that a greater amount of wrinkled and sun damaged skin can be removed than with the older laser technologies, and a better medical result is achieved. There is some minor increase in recovery time with redness for around 5-6 days. Still, the Starlux fractional ablative lasers require much less recovery time than the old non fractional erbium and CO2 ablative lasers which actually burned off the top layers of the patients dermis. Starlux 2940: Competing Fractional Laser Technologies Reliant: (the company that makes Fraxel) CO2 fractional laser called Repair Lumenis: CO2 fractional ablative lasers; ActiveFX & DeepFx Palomar now has the Starlux 2940 Erbium fractional ablative skin resurfacing laser. Medical Spa MD is a medical community of Plastic Surgeons, Cosmetic Dermatologists, and Aesthetic Physicians with more than 2,000 physician members and offers current physician discussion forums on Starlux 2940 Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing and nonsurgical cosmetic medical technologies and treatments.

Hyaluronic Acid Fillers & Medical Spas

Radiesse Filler Injections & Your Medical Spa Radiesse filler injections are composed of very small and smooth calcium hydroxylapitite microspheres which are suspended in a water-based gel carrier. Calcium Hydroxylapitite is a biocompatible, biodegradable material identical in composition to the mineral portion of teeth and bone. Radiesse is used to fill moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds such as nasolabial folds. Radiesse is generally not used to enhance the lips or lip line. The Radiesse gel and microspheres form a “scaffold” that stimulates natural collagen production and encourages tissue growth in and around the injection area. The body absorbs the gel carrier as collagen has begun to infiltrate the area thus replacing the gel with natural tissue. The microspheres continue to provide support while the body completes this process. Eventually, the microspheres are safely absorbed by the body. This entire reconstruction process can take anywhere up to 3 years providing additional injections are administered to maintain even results. Radiesse injectiosn are similar to that of other Hyaluronic Acid fillers. After the Radiesse is injected, the plastic surgeon, dermatologist, or medical spa provider should provide the patient with specific post-care instructions which may include: • No rubbing, movement or massaging of the area that could cause the Radiesse to migrate. • No makeup for the next 24 hours. • No sun and heat exposure. Radiesse injections last from 6 to 18 months with an average of 11 months for nasolabial folds. Physicians use a variety of pain management techniques during treatment to ensure patient comfort. Ask your physician about which techniques are right for you. Few side effects reported in clinical trials and actual usage. You may experience some common injection-related reactions, such as mild irritation, edema, swelling, itching, discoloration, or tenderness at the injection site. These conditions typically resolve themselves within one to two days. Learn more at Medical Spa MDs forums for Plastic Surgeons & Cosmetic Dermatologists.

Mayo Clinic Now Uses DRX9000

By Dr. Randall Pruitt

Spinal decompression is considered as experimental for many years. It was only recently when doctor's find out that it is effective. Spinal decompression are known to treat lower back pain, neck pain and even sciatica.

Recently Axiom Worldwide the manufacturer of the DRX9000 announced that during Pain Week in Las Vegas two studies were going to be unveiled. One was a study with contributors from the Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins and Stanford Medical School to name a few. This study showed such promise that the Mayo Clinic in North Scottsdale is actually going to get a DRX9000 for research.

As the director of a clinic that has been doing spinal decompression for over 10 years I found that very exciting. I called the doctor from the Mayo Clinic associated with the study and he confirmed that yes the research is promising and they were in fact obtaining a DRX9000 to further investigate the clinic effectiveness of spinal decompression. I went on to tell him about the thousands of patients that we have seen here at The Arizona Back Institute that got better with decompression when all else failed. He was very positive about the outcomes he was expecting to get. Its really about time some of the major teaching institutions got involved to further the proof that decompression works. It is certainly a step in the right direction.

DRX9000 Treatment A Surgeons Point of View.

By Dr.Randall Pruitt

This recent interview was posted on Spine Universe:

W. Robert Hudgins, MD Neurosurgeon Neurological Surgeons of Dallas Dallas, TX

In this interview, W. Robert Hudgins, MD, explains what motivated him to choose the DRX9000 for his practice, his experience using the equipment, as well as patient outcomes.

Dr. Hudgins, why did you opt to try the DRX9000 in your practice?

Id have to say, it had a lot to do with the failure of general traction, and sometimes physical therapy, in the treatment of back pain. General traction has been used for many years as a conservative back pain therapy. The drawback to general traction is it cannot exert adequate pull on the lumbar spine to really do much good. When the DRX9000 was introduced to me, I was intrigued by the science and technical aspects of its controlled spinal decompression therapy.

Unlike conventional traction, the DRX9000 exerts adequate forces to distract vertebrae to create negative pressure within disc spaces to decompress the spine. It simply makes sense and the DRX9000 was the equipment I found to have worked out a complete system out to accomplish spinal decompression.

Why do you say sometimes physical therapy fails?

Im not discrediting physical therapy by any means, but some back pain patients are not compliant with the demands of a PT program. Unfortunately, for some, physical therapy is not successful. There are many reasons besides issues related to pain that prevent patients from doing well in PT. Some back pain patients need rest to help alleviate symptoms, which the DRX9000 provides. The DRX9000 does not replace physical therapy, but is an adjunctive treatment. Patients learn how to exercise to build strength and flexibility, as well as biomechanics for injury prevention.

What is involved in DRX9000 treatment?

In treating a low back problem, such as a bulging disc, the patient is positioned on the table, secured into place by means of a vest with under arm support to prevent the body from sliding downward. A belt is affixed about the waist. The treatment duration, amount of pull (in pounds), and decompression angle are entered into the computer. The computer uses the data to calculate a slow progression to maximum pull while alternating pulling and relaxing. A typical treatment lasts 20- to 30-minutes. Varying the angle of decompression (pull) adjusts the force through the target disc level. Angle variation cannot be effectively accomplished by means of conventional traction.

The amount of pull, or pounds; how is that calculated?

It depends on the patients condition. Generally, I start with one-half of the patients weight minus 20-pounds. For example, a 200-pound patient would start therapy at a maximum of 80-pounds of pull. As treatment is tolerated, the amount of pull may be gradually increased to half the body weight plus 10-pounds. As a rule, I start with the lower amount of pull and gradually increase.

Do patients experience immediate or gradual pain relief?

It is variable. A few patients have reported after 3 or 4 treatments they already feel much better. However, for the treatment to be most effective, a full 3 to 4 weeks is recommended.

Are other treatments combined with DRX9000 therapy?

Yes. Patients receive electrical stimulation and mechanical massage after each treatment to prevent or reduce stiffness and muscle spasm. Depending on the patients spinal disorder, they are instructed to wear a brace, which is discontinued after the program.

What spinal disorders do you treat using the DRX9000? It is interesting and perhaps self-defeating that many of the patients referred to me for spine surgery, are successfully treated with spinal decompression. These patients include those with bulging and herniated discs and degenerated discs. Certain spinal problems such as spondylolisthesis, stenosis, and arthritis are not appropriate for decompression. The key is careful patient evaluation and selection.

Im a strong believer in nonsurgical therapy before approaching surgery. Of course, some patients, such as someone with drop foot, may require immediate surgery.

Is the patients age a factor?

Generally, no. Two cases come to mind. The first is an active male in his early 30s who enjoys golf and tennis. He presented as a surgical referral with a herniated disc. However, he didnt want surgery. The second case is an older female, a hospital tech who suffered back pain for 3 years. Both patients wanted to try the DRX9000 instead of surgery. Both continue to do well years after decompression treatment and without surgery.

Does this mean results are permanent?

Ive used the DRX9000 since 2000 and have followed my patients. In general, 2 out of 3 low back pain and 3 out of 4 neck pain patients obtain excellent relief. About 75-80% of my patients continue to do well. I estimate 20-25% return with pain and ask to be treated again; a few may require surgery. In my experience, the majority of patients are pleased with their outcome.

What is the learning curve to use the DRX9000?

About 3 days of training is necessary. When my practice obtained its first DRX9000, my PA and I administered therapy to all patients. Once we were familiar with the equipment, and the number of patients grew, we hired a dedicated tech to administer DRX9000 therapy. Belt placement to prevent slippage during treatment is an art, but not difficult to learn.

Wed like to know how many patients your practice has treated using the DRX9000?

To date, nearly 800. Patient evaluation and selection is important to treatment success using the DRX9000. Just as every patient is not a surgical candidate, not all patients with a back or neck problem are candidates for spinal decompression.

Thank you Dr. Hudgins.

You are welcome.

The Different Types of Laser Hair Removal

By Caleb Liu

The concept of using a laser in order to remove hair has been popular for the past two decades. You may not be aware that there are several different types of laser hair removal that people are taking advantage of. They offer a fast and painless way to remove unwanted hair for both men and women. The process lasts longer and it isn't painful like electrolysis or waxing. Laser hair removal is considered to be a permanent solution to unwanted hair instead of a temporary one like the alternatives.

With the process of laser hair removal small amounts of radiation are administered to the area with a beam of heated light. This results in the hair follicles being damaged to the point where they can no longer allow new hair to grow. Occasionally a few hairs do come back but they are after very few, thin, and very light so they won't be as obvious as they were prior to the laser hair removal.

The first laser hair removal system was called Nd:YAG - while others existed this was the first one approved for use by the FDA. This particular process required the individual to have the area waxed first, which is quite painful. Next a heated lotion was applied to the hair follicles so that they would be damaged. The skin around the area was not harmed.

For individuals with very light skin the Ruby Laser is the best option. It can also be use at low levels for those with darker skin with out causing damage to the pigment. This is a painless type of laser for hair removal. It is common used to remove small amounts of hair.

For larger patches of hair the Alexandrite Laser is recommended. It can is able to penetrate the hairs that are very coarse as well. This is the most common type of laser treatment used on men. The entire back can be cleared of hair in 45 minutes or less. Some technicians rely on the Diode Laser because it is the least expensive one and it can be used on various types of skin.

The newest type of laser hair removal equipment on the market is the Cool Glide. This is a very expensive piece of equipment as well. It has been known to effectively treat even dark skin without any time of damage. The tip of it is refrigerated so that it offers a cool touch as the work is being done. This is also safer than lasers that use heat to harm the hair follicles because they could damage the skin.

Medical Spa Startup Success Tips

Medical spa success starts with a plan. Write your Medical Spa plan yourself, you'll learn more than a little. It's also a usual requirement for getting financing. Medical spas are retail medical business and come with special restrictions as well as opportunities. Non-physicians can not employ physicians, HIPPA compliance, medical oversight, and a host of other regulatory issues need to be addressed. Play fast and loose with these rules and you're asking for trouble. (One of our local competitors in Utah was not providing adequate physician oversight. The state walked in one day, confiscated all of their technology and patient records and closed them down.) Medical spa financing: Say "medical spa" as a plastic surgeon and you're everyone's best friend. Banks, lenders, technology companies will all have big smiles on their faces and papers in their hands, ready to finance everything you need. If you're not a physician it's not going to be as easy. A bank will probably be your first stop. Banks provide the best rates but are the most rigorous in investigating borrowers and have the least tolerance for risky loans. (and your medical spa is risky.) Banks will require that you have spotless credit and that the entire loan is secured. In most cases, everyone who owns 10% or more of the business will be personally responsible for the loan and have to provide two or more years of tax returns. Be prepared for a torrent of loan paperwork. Banks will want to see your personal financial statements, cash flow, a business plan (although they don't read it), and have a visit. The bank is going to want to know how the funds are intended to be used and will want to see tangible assets that have a market and can be sold if the business fails or you can't make the payments. They don't want to hear that you need more money for marketing and advertising or salaries that don't have any resale value. For a physician owned medical spa, banks will extend a loan or line of credit. Loans have a set schedule and payments. A line of credit is somewhat different. The idea is that the bank extends a line of credit that you may draw on. Interest is paid only on the amount of money that is used. However, banks usually require that the entire balance is paid off and unused for one month every year to ensure that the business is liquid. If you can't meet this requirement, your credit line may revert to a loan. Some bankers are at least moderately helpful. At one time a local branch manager told one of our accountants that wanted some information that "he didn't need our business and we could just live with that". Avoid these types if you can. A friendly banker can go a long way in securing loans and providing a little flexibility if things don't go exactly as you planned. If you find a great banker, send him a Christmas card and some cookies once in a while. Banks often suggest (or apply on your behalf for) an SBA (Small Business Administration) loan that's partially guaranteed by the government. If you're going to need more money than you have in IPLs and lasers, you still have a couple of options like partnerships, joint-ventures, venture loans or equity. Most start-ups involve some form of equity exchange. It's common for entrepreneurs to take little or no money until the business is cash flow positive. Sweat equity at this stage usually extends only to the founders but may extend to badly needed partners. When we started our first medical spa I took an 80% reduction in income. Medical spa equity rules; the more money you need and higher the risk, the more equity you're going to give up. Angel investors are the first stop for most medical spas if they're not self funded. Angel financing is usually raised from friends and family or "high net-worth" individuals. In some cases you may find "Angel Groups" that meet together and look for investments. Angels are usually found a the early stages of a business and are often bought out when larger investors come in. Venture debt is basically a venture loan. (not recommended for medical spas) The lender charges a higher interest rate than banks are allowed to (often around 14%) and accepts more risk. You will have to give up a small percentage of your company in what are called warrants. This small percentage (usually less than 5%) allows the lender to share in any potential upside. Venture debt is worth considering if you're sure of success and you don't want or need to give up a large equity position in you company but you'll still be personally responsible. Venture Capital: For most medical spas, venture capital is not an option. When you add up the entire deal, you're looking at about 80% compounding interest each year in return for that money. VC's are looking for an investment term of three to five years and a ROI (return on investment) of 700% or more. Whew. You're also going to loose complete control of your company and have someone constantly looking over your shoulder. There are cases where this actually makes sense. Many VC are extremely well connected and bring these resources to the table. Now that you've got the money for your medical spa. What to do? Most medical spas are grown from an existing medical practice. The idea of having IPLs and laser technicians and estheticians producing revenue, low additional overhead, increased patient flow, and the feel that "I could do that" is attractive to a large number of doctors who are tired of the grind of medicine. (We've been approached by a surprising diversity of physicians looking to enter this market including; anesthesiologists, cardio-thoracic surgeons, and even podiatrists.) Multiple medical spa Locations: After some initial success, many physicians and medical spa owners open additional medical spas. (For some reason, these second-clinic startups are often opened by a relative, usually a wife or daughter.) These second locations never achieve the success of the first clinic for a very simple reason; their a completely different animal. If you're thinking of opening multiple locations you're work load just tripled. Multiple location sites are outside the abilities of most physicians and involve a much greater financial risk. Staffing and human resources, legal issues, medical oversight... most fail within the first year. Great medical spas are built around great systems. If your first medspa doesn't run without you there for a month, you're not ready for a second. Expanding fast is a sure why to overextend your resources and get yourself into trouble. If you've closed a second clinic, lenders are going to be very wary of lending you money. Medical spa franchises, he "Turn Key Solution": Medspa Franchises and consultants love to drop this phrase. The idea is an attractive one. Experts will guide your steps: Marketing, financing, training, everything will be delivered with a nice little box with a bow on top. Knowing a number of franchise owners and the problems they've encountered, I would give this advice; beware. The current crop of medical spa franchises have problems. (One of them in California was shut down for selling medical practices to non-physicians. They've since reopened and are among the most aggressive advertisers.) Medical spa franchises are attractive because they claim to have all the answers. If you'll just write the checks all of your troubles will be over. What you'll really get are some manuals, pre-written scripts for sales, and bad ad-slicks. You'll also get: locked into specific technologies that might be second-tier (the franchise gets kick-backs), spend money you could use elsewhere, and pay royalties on all of your income. (The franchises that offer a flat fee are an even worse idea. They have absolutely no motivation to help you.) Rule of thumb: Big medical spas eat little medical spas. Large, well-financed medical businesses with smart physicians and high-quality care are going to open up next door to you. (You're the corner store, they're Wal-Mart) These businesses will be category killers and if you're not well established with a broad market presence and multiple revenue streams, you'll be gone. Bad IPL & laser choices: Choosing the right IPLs and Lasers is one of the things that will let you move ahead a step, or put you in cement boots where you stand. I always think of the way one physician described the pair of IPLs [Intense Pulsed Light devices] that he'd bought; as $80,000 towel dryers. Before you decide on which system to buy you're going to need to crunch the numbers. How many shots will the IPL heads last for until they need to be rebuilt? How much support is included? What kind of training is provided? Does the device work well enough? Buy your cosmetic laser, or lease. Leasing your cosmetic laser is the best way to go if you want to pay for your equipment as you use it. Many of the technology companies have delayed payment plans as long as six months. Buying used equipment is often the best way to save money if cash flow is not an issue. You can often save up to 40% off the price of a new machine if you have the cash. Cash flow is a problem many new medical spas face. Medspa revenues and growth projections are exaggerated. Before you invest in embroidered leather spa tables, make sure you can pay your phone bill. One medical spa spent $350,000 on build out and didn't have any money left to attract new patients. They were out of business in four months. Medical spa finances: • The medical spa Golden Rule is correctly translated as: He with the gold makes the rules. • You're going to end up being personally responsible for the money: Physicians sometimes think that they can use equity in their medical spa or future earnings as security. Wrong. • Be savvy financially: It's tempting to take as much money as you can get. Don't. All the money you take will come with strings attached. • But take enough money: Lenders hate it when you need additional money and worry something's gone wrong with your original plan. • Competition in medical spas is fierce. If your medical spa market is already "owned" by a competitor, think carefully before going into debt to compete in a market you can't win. Financing your medical spa is like anything else. In order to really find the best solutions you're going to need to do some research. Remember, the most common reason that businesses fail is not lack of capital, its poor decision making. 19 Fractional CO2 Laser Tips for Cosmetic Dermatologists

By 5. Tattoos: DeepFx might be good for resistant Tattoos

Fractional CO2 laser ablation has become increasingly popular as an alternative to traditional plastic surgery. So, What do Cosmetic Dermatologists & Plastic Surgeons want to know about C02 fractional treatments?

Treating Specific Cosmetic Conditions:

1. DeepFx is best for vertical lip lines, deep wrinkles, acne scars. It goes deep and stimulates more collagen and ablates more tissue for more tightening.

2. Reliants ActiveFx is better for more superficial pigment and more surface textural problems

3. Stria (Stretch Marks): Use ActiveFx: 80-100 mj, density 1-2 (use Density 2 for thicker Stria). Do NOT use the DeepFx for Stria.

4. For Melasma: Medical experts don't recommend treating Malasma at this time. (See below for current thoughts or changes.) This may change. Melasma is a whole topic an issue by itself.

5. Tattoos: DeepFx might be good for resistant Tattoos that have resisted other treatments.

Pre / Post Treatment Tips for Fractional C02 Laser Treatments:

1. Use mild moisturizers to avoid acne flare-ups.

2. You don't need to use Aquaphor or Vasoline for this. Mild moisturizers are enough.

3. Be aware of the Lanolin in the Aquaphor.

4. Using Aveeno Water Gel can lessen downtime up to a day!

5. Post TotalFx Care: Use "Soaks" every 3-4 hours. (What type of soaks? Saline Soaks (saline and gauze)? How long do you soak every 3-4 hours?)

6. Post Care: Cold packs or Zimmer Cooler for 30-45 min after treatment.

7. Valtrex for all patients. (One case of disseminated herpes on the face is not good.) Might use Acyclovir since it costs much less (Four Dollars at Walmart!).

8. Check all patients by phone the next day, this makes you both feel better.

9. Don't give pain medications after treatment. They should not have pain for more than a few hours. Prolonged pain suggests infection: bacterial, viral, or fungal.

10. Use Pliaglis mixed with Cetaphil cleanser or moisturizer. 90% Pliaglis and 10% cleanser or moisturizer in the mix.

11. Experts worry about possible Lidocaine toxicity so excercise care. Compounded Lidocaine works as well or better than Pliaglis. Pliaglis costs $60 per treatment. Compounded Lidocaine costs about $6 per treatment.

12. Experts do NOT routinely prescribe oral antibiotics unless indicated for an acne outbreak. Keflex 500 mg TID, Doxycycline 100 mg BID, Erythromycin to prevent outbreaks.

13. Sunscreens: Make sure they use everyday after skin is healed. Wear your hat and stay out of sun.

14. Good UVA blocker as further protection.

Fractional C02 lasers can produce great results if used correctly, but like any cosmetic medical technology, it's not perfect.

Enteric Coated Fish Oil Can Help With Asthma

By Dr. Bill

I'm still enjoying the Florida sunshine as I write because my trip back to Long Island was delayed. One of my large family, (of cats) had to have surgery, and he can't travel until at least Wednesday. I'll just sit here and suffer in the 70 degree weather.

A friend of mine coached girls basketball for many years, and over that time he had a small handfull of them suffer from what is called "sports" or "exercise induced" asthma. The vigorous exercise triggered an acute narrowing of the airways, making it very hard for them to breathe.

99% of the time this was alleviated by the use of an inhaler, and 30 minutes of inactivity. Then, the girl was good to go again. These girls were exceptions to the general rule, in that most kids with this problem opt not to participate in athletics, or anything strenuous. Inactivity is not a good habit to get into at any age, but this is what happens, and many misinformed parents push their kids in this direction, not wanting them to get hurt, or embarrassed.

On my friend's team they had a remarkable system. The other girls would help out with the inhaler while the assistent coach supervised. And the affected girl's breathing would get back to normal as she calmed down.

Then, as if nothing had happened, the girl would leap right back into the game.

I've just seen a study showing that a low salt diet combined with pharmaceutical grade fish oil supplementation reduces the incidence of bronchoconstriction, or "sports" asthma.

The study, which was done in 2006 at the University of Indiana, demonstrated post-exercise lung function of adults with moderate to mild persistant asthma, improved by 64%. Their use of emergency inhalers decreased by roughly 31%.

There was a key finding in the study that grabbed my attention. While on the diet and supplementing with fish oil, airway pro-inflammatory cells and markers were reduced in the participants. These are responsible for airway inflammation and airway obstruction.

So about that other key factor - salt. Where are kids getting it these days?

Cheetos, hot dogs, Doritos, frozen pizza, potato chips, and most microwavable food. All loaded with salt.

If you spend much time around kinds, you know they're putting this stuff away by the kilo.

I advise you to get rid of this stuff if it's in your home. And everyone will benefit if you start introducing your kids to better food.

And enteric coated pharmaceutical grade fish oil isn't just for yourself, it's for the whole family. It's never too late to start everyone on the path to healthy eating and living.

Good food and good exercise, plus enteric coated pharmaceutical grade fish oil, mean your chances of contracting this type of asthma may be very slim indeed.

Prenatal Vitamins...DO You Really Need Them?

By Keith M. Henry

Due to our increased knowledge with regard to health, many women have become informed with regard to the importance of prenatal vitamins and their role in preventing birth defects. It is important to know that both mother and child do have increased nutritional needs during pregnancy.Although many women are prescribed prenatal vitamins by their doctors during their pregnancy, it is becoming more common in some areas that even women who are planning to conceive begin taking prenatal vitamins. Thus many women begin protecting their body's early.

Most Prenatal vitamins are specially formulated to make up for nutritional deficiencies in a mother's diet, and contain supplements such as vitamins, zinc, iron, and calcium. Perhaps most important, they contain folic acid, which reduces the risk of serious birth defects of the brain and spinal cord. Prenatal vitamins could very well prove to play a vital role in a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby, due in large part to the great defiencies now found in most of our food. However, prenatal vitamins are not meant to be your sole source of nutrients. They are meant to supplement, or prevent certain nutrient deficiencies. Eating a healthy, varied and balanced diet will go a long way toward ensuring the health of both mother and infant.

IMPORTANT NUTRIENTS FOR MOTHER AND CHILD:

DHA

DHA is a fatty acid belonging to the omega- 3 family, and it is very important for brain development. This nutrient is crucial for the baby from the very beginning of pregnancy through the time of breast feeding. It is essential to the body, but much more so during pregnancy.

IRON

The mineral iron is drawn upon heavily by the baby in the third trimester of pregnancy; it draws its supply from the stored supply of the mother. Iron is very important, and will be found in most prenatal vitamins.

FOLIC ACID

Folic Acid is very essential for a healthy pregnancy and healthy fetal development. It has been shown to decrease the risk of birth defects like spine bifida or other neural tube defects. Folic acid is naturally found in dark, leafy vegetables, citrus fruits, dried beans, and whole grain breads and cereals. Most cereals are also fortified with many other vitamins and can be a good dietary choice for the pregnant woman who cannot tolerate vitamins. Folic acid is an essential nutrient that can help prevent birth defects in newborns.

Folic acid has been found to be necessary to the neural tube development of the baby. This takes place during the first trimester of a woman's pregnancy. Some women even begin taking folic acid or folate 30 days or more before attempting pregnancy.

CALCIUM

Calcium as most women are aware is extremely important, it is more so important in the development of a baby. Calcium, along with magnesium, help protects the mother's bones. The recommended amount of 1200 mg. per day of is not found in most prenatal supplements. It should be remembered, however, that you will obtain some of your calcium from food.

Not all prenatal vitamins are of the same quality of course. They all tend to have all of the basic nutrients in them that are necessary at such a crucial time for a woman's body. However, the best prenatal will provide what mother and child needs, at just the right amounts, as well as avoiding amounts that tend to toxicity.

Did The Pittsburgh Steelers Have A Secret Weapon

By Dr. Bill

I'm getting ready for another road trip, and then I'm going to be settling in for a couple of months in Long Island. Hopefully Spring isn't far off, and the sunshine is coming quickly. Really quickly, because these bones don't like the cold much anymore.

Today I found an interesting article published in the first issue of Sports Health: A Multi-Disciplinary Approach. It's a medical publication that probably wouldn't have much appeal for sports fans.

Just take a look at the title, which was "Evaluation of Lipid Profiles and the Use of Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acid in Professional Football Players." Most would find the box score of a Celtics game more fun, but I love this kind of stuff. So let my nerdish obsessions work in your favor.

To make it easier for you to understand, 36 members of the Steelers were given pharmaceutical grade fish oil, and then evaluated using what is called a VAP(R)Cholesterol Test. What they were looking for was emerging cardiovascular risk factors, and determining whether omega 3 EFAs (essential fatty acids), found in pharmaceutical grade fish oil can reduce these factors.

Each participant was given 2560 mg per day during the period of study of EPA/DHA omega 3 fatty acid supplements.

According to Dr. James Erlich, the Chief Medical Officer of Atherotech, a partner in the study, professional football players are statistically at higher than normal risk for future cardiovascular disease and sudden heart attack.

This doesn't surprise me, judging by the bodies when they line up to play. These guys are massive, and linemen are considered "light" at 280 pounds these days. A 300 pound lineman is now common. When their careers end, the sheer body mass catches up with them.

The VAP Tests determined that pharmaceutical grade fish oil improved good cholesterol in Steeler players, and lowered damaging particles and triglycerides. Elevated levels of triglycerides (ie., animal fats) are associated with diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Taking the pharmaceutical grade fish oil may not have helped much when they played against the Cardinals, but it will help them after the game's over, for the rest of their lives. These guys are tough, big, strong, and kind of crazy. After all, they play professional sports.

And the fact is, many of them die much too young, often from heart attack and stroke. Giving these Sunday warriors pharmaceutical grade fish oil is a big step in the right direction.

Keep in mind that fish oil is not just for professional athletes, or just 300 pounders. It can help virtually anyone, from helping to quell joint pain to assisting in the flushing of your arteries to stopping migraines.

If you want to extend your reservation at this grand hotel, get some now, and keep taking it.

Protein Conditioner For Breaking Hair

By Tim Faber

A protein conditioner for breaking hair combines wheat and rice proteins to improve strength, shine and manageability. Excellent for reducing breaking or repairing damaged hair, conditioners formulated with silk proteins have become the "hottest" compliment to any hair regimen to add body, infuse moisture and increase tensile strength.

Hair that is extremely dry and damaged tends to be more brittle and is more prone to breaking easily. This is essentially because damaged hair signifies that the cuticle of the hair is chipped or cracked. In severely damaged hair, the cuticle could even be completely worn off, causing the hair to become weak and brittle.

Some of the factors that cause hair to become damaged and break easily include:

* Over exposure to the sun * Washing hair too frequently * Combing or brushing hair too vigorously * Over use of styling products such as dyeing, perming lotions and straighteners * Excessive use of heating appliances such as curling irons, straightening irons and blow dryers * Exposure to the chlorine in swimming pools or even swimming in salt water * Hereditary

In certain instances it is possible to reduce the damage done to your hair by wearing a hat when going out in the sun and by wearing a swimming cap before diving into the water for a swim.

There are also certain products available that are especially formulated to make the hair stronger, softer and less brittle. These products contain a blend of ingredients that help strengthen the follicle, coat the cuticle and repair split ends. Protein conditioners are most effective as they help hydrate and strengthen the hair, making it less brittle and less prone to tearing, frizz and breakage.

Protein conditioners that contain a combination of wheat, rice and corn proteins help strengthen the follicles and improve root health. This gives the hair better body and shine while reducing split ends and breaking. When added to conditioners, amino acid will help to rebuild each strand of hair so that it grows as healthy as possible.

Will My Hair Really Stop Breaking?

When your hair is infused with protein it becomes much stronger and also more manageable. The stronger your hair is and the more manageable it is, the less breakage you are likely to see. A protein conditioner for breaking hair are easily available and are a far more viable option than getting regular salon treatments.

Secrets to Healthy Hair Exposed

By Kristy Scott

One look at that woman's healthy shiny hair can make you instantly envious. If you are wondering why you do not have the same kind of beautiful hair, you have to know that it takes a lot of work, effort, patience and time to maintain a mane that consists of gorgeous locks that will turn heads wherever you go.

Here are some of the top secrets to healthy hair that will surely make you the new envy of the women around you:

1. Get a good cut.

This is hardly a secret but it is true that some women take a good haircut for granted. They do not know is that a trim is able to ensure that your hair is free from damaged split ends that can make it look dull and dreary. Having regular trims will keep your hair looking great and healthy at all times.

2. Hydrate your hair.

Some people are not probably aware that drinking water is not only essential for hydrating one's body and skin but it also does the same thing for your hair. Drink plenty of water and healthy fluids every day to keep your hair from drying up.

3. Avoid using too many products.

Limit your use of hair products to two to three items-shampoo, conditioner, and mousse or styling gel. Use only high quality items that have rich moisturizing formula that will not leave your hair dull and dry. Moreover, find a product that will be suitable for your hair type and texture. Go for those that have mild and gentle formula.

4. Protect your hair against heat.

Heat can also be a great hazard to your hair. Avoid going out into the sun in the hours of 10 am to 2 pm because this is when the UV rays are strongest and most harmful. Don a hat or bandana to avoid exposing your hair to the heat of the sun.

Moreover, use only high quality hair equipment such as CHI irons, Babyliss hair dryer, and so on. These products come with adjustable temperature setting so that you can control the heat and prevent your hair from getting cooked. Do not forget to use a heat protection spray prior to using any heat appliance.

5. Get plenty of sleep.

It is during sleep that a body recuperates to repair any damage including hair damage. Getting adequate sleep and rest will contribute to a healthier hair. It is a good idea to sleep on a satin pillowcase to avoid waking up to a fly-away hair.

6. Moisturize intensively.

Using an intensive conditioner once a week is effective in rejuvenating your hair and keeping it soft, moisturized and looking great. For a more efficient treatment, wrap your hair with a plastic shower cap after application of the conditioner and leave it on for ten to fifteen minutes before you rinse it out thoroughly.

7. Eat a proper diet.

Having a well balanced diet that consists of protein and essential amino acids is another great way of maintaining a healthy and glowing hair.

8. Use hair equipment properly.

Just because you bought a reliable Babyliss hair dryer does not mean you can do whatever you want with your hair because there is no risk of damage. Even the most advanced pieces of hair equipment need to be used carefully to ensure safety and efficiency. So make sure you read and understand the manual of the hair equipment before using.

A healthy hair is not something that only rich people or the celebrities from Hollywood can achieve. If you follow these terrific tips, you will be on your way to having a hair that is radiant and healthy.

What You Can Expect at a Medical Spa

By A Aaronson
Wrinkles and age spots make you feel old and you've decided you want to do something about them. The problem is you are a little wary of hospital and clinics. Besides, the harsh lights reflecting off the white walls make these imperfections stand out. What if you could visit a spa and rejuvenate your skin without the clinical atmosphere? You can. Medical spa services give you that youthful appearance in a relaxing setting. Here are some of the most common procedures you can expect from a med spa: * Microdermabrasion This is a milder and non-invasive version of dermabrasion which should be done in a medical facility. Microdermabrasion, however, is a very common procedure among medical spa services. Using a wand that blasts the skin with tiny bits of crystal and then vacuums them back up along with the skin cells. It slowly removes layers of skin and typically requires more than one session. This procedure is great for correcting dark spots and removing lines and mild wrinkles. * Photofacials This procedure uses pulse light therapy and heat to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles. It also works on other conditions like acne scarring and hyper-pigmentation. The heat and light work to promote natural collagen formation in the skin. Collagen is what gives the skin its elasticity and volume. * Laser Skin Treatments There are several types of laser treatments commonly used in med spas. Fraxel, CO2 and Erbium laser treatments are some of the latest technologies. These lasers penetrate the layers of skin and either kill or wound the affected area. The dead skin comes off, revealing fresh new skin layers. The type of treatment and laser used determines how deep and traumatic the results. Results are noticeable after one treatment, but if your wrinkles and dark spots are moderate to severe, it will take more than one session. * Chemical Peels This treatment's active ingredient is glycolic acid. It is applied to the face and allowed to sit and penetrate the skin. When it is removed, a layer skin is sloughed off. * Injectable Fillers These products should be administered by a dermatologist or the plastic surgeon on staff. Botox, Restylane and other fillers are commonly used at med spas and are a popular lunchtime fix for lines and wrinkles. While these medical spa services are medical grade procedures, the staff makes every effort to disguise this fact by using soft lighting, warm colors, soothing music and scents. They also try to incorporate a little pampering because these procedures can be quite uncomfortable and maybe painful. A hand, arm and neck massage helps distract from the discomfort sometimes felt during the facials, peels and other procedures. If you decide to partake of medical spa services, check out the facility and make sure there is a physician overseeing the facility and performing the more invasive procedures. Also make sure the dermatologists, nurses and aestheticians are licensed and trained on the equipment. Certificates and diplomas should be displayed, but if not, don't be afraid to ask. Do this and you can sit back, relax and enjoy your journey to a younger looking you. Get the latest cosmetic treatments done in a relaxed, comfortable and non-clinical environment. Day spa in Vernon Hills IL offers a wide array of skin rejuvenation solutions with the latest techniques in aesthetic technology. Explore your options at http://www.newtrendmedicalspa.com

Medical Spa in NYC

"We are looking into opening a medical spa. We are physicians, general practititoners, and have spoken to several consultants who would provide assistance to do the business planning, financial proformas, operating procedures, assist in hiring staff, marketing, equipment recommendations, space planning, info systems recommendations, web site development, etc.

We are located in the greater NY metropolitan area. anyone use a consultant they would recommend, or is it even worthwhile to do so?"

And here's my response:

Beware. The vast majority of medical spa consultants are less than worthless in my opinion. Thre are only two that I've ever recommended and they both specialize in a specific niche.

Physicians are, as a rule, intelligent, but they think that because they're intelligent that they'll be able to 'think their way through' a problem. That's not generally the rule. Physicians have a reputation for being poor at business and there's reason enough for that.

The real cost of poor medical spa consultants is that they waste your time and distract you with irrelevant things like proformas statements and excel worksheets that project your earnings. Useless. Of the dozens of clinics I've been involved in and the millions of dollars spent and made, I've yet to see one single medical spa business plan that was worth a piss in the wind.

My advice is this. Go slow. The market isn't going to be kind to those who make mistakes and you can easily spend a couple of hundred thousand dollars in a bloodbath education. Just ask the myriad of physicians who regularly frequent this site. Go slow. Go slow. Go slow. Spreadsheets are worse than useless as are business plans. I've written dozens and they're used to give a sense of security where there is none.

Choosing technology? Note this sentence from Susan DeGuide MDs testimonial on joining Medical Spa MD: "I would not buy a new piece of equipment now without first consulting Medical Spa MD".

Post a question about the technology you're investigating and you'll receive responses and possibly an offer to talk by the physicians who are using it. If you don't take advantage of this resource you're too stupid to be practicing medicine. (Getting off on a little bit of a rant there... sorry.)

If you're looking for someone to build your medical spa for you so you can just step in, work 40 hours a week, and own everything, you've already lost. Cosmetic medicine is an entirely new area for most non-core docs and there's a learning curve. Don't get ahead of it. The greatest thing about Medical Spa MD is that you're able to find and network with physicians who are not your direct competition and are willing to help. Take advantage of it.

If you have some advice for a physician group in NYC that's opening a Medical Spa, help them out here or in the forums.
