Allergan Q1 Profits: Botox, Dysport, Juvederm Ultra XC

Posted: 12 May 2010 08:24 AM PDT

Allergan's Q1 Earnings Call: Allergan's thoughts on it's Botox and Juvederm Ultra XC growth.

You might want to visit our Select Partner Medical Spa RX after reading this.

First quarter sales increased year-over-year 11.2% in dollars and 6.9% in local currencies, boosted by the strong pickup in the sales of medical devices, which grew 18.4% in dollars and 13.4% in local currencies. The growth in the Medical Aesthetics businesses was even stronger outside the U.S. in all regions and across a wide range of countries, with surprisingly strong performance in Europe.

Operating performance was strong, with non-GAAP earnings per share at $0.65, marking an increase of 18.2% versus the result for Q1 of 2009, and comfortably exceeding the Q1 expectations shared with you, the investment community, of $0.57 to $0.59.

Earnings growth was driven by strong gross margin expansion, especially in the Medical Device segment. Careful spending in the selling, general administrative area, whilst we increased investment in R&D by 11.1% on a non-GAAP.

Within SG&A, we however doubled our DTC expenditures versus Q1 of 2009, which of course was the low watermark for spending when the world economy was in crisis. Our plan is to continue to invest in 2010 across our brands and into the recovery of our markets.

During the quarter, we were pleased that we continued to strengthen our R&D pipeline, supplementing our internally development programs with acquisitions and licenses. In January, we acquired Serica, a company with proprietary technology for use in tissue regeneration especially applicable to breast reconstruction, as well as the license for Ser-120 in Phase III clinical development for nocturia. Strategically, we have made good progress in building up a portfolio of urology assets.

We also furthered our aspirations to be the leader in medical aesthetics also in Asia, by reacquiring the rights to BOTOX Cosmetic in Japan and China and expanded our footprint in fast-growing emerging markets by establishing direct operations for all of our businesses in Turkey, effective from the second quarter.

After the out-licensing transaction with Bristol-Myers for neuropathic pain, we've increased our degree of R&D focus on our core specialty areas.

Now I’d like to comment on our expectations for 2010. For the full year earnings outlook, we have brought up the bottom of the EPS range by $0.02 to $3.11 and have left the top end of the range at $3.15 which at the time of the last earnings call expressly excluded the costs of any healthcare reform bill in the United States. With the increase of the Medicaid rebate, extension to managed Medicaid and expansion of eligible hospitals in the so-called 340B program, we estimate that the cost of healthcare reform in 2010 will be approximately $12 million. This is now included in our outlook.

Turning to BOTOX

Sales growth has picked up relative to trends seen across 2009, with growth versus the first quarter of 2009 at 11.3% in dollars and at 6.6% in local currencies. Sales of $331 million were only modestly lower sequentially than Q4, which is always seasonally the highest quarter of the year. Most of this increase was due to the more economically sensitive aesthetic side of the business, as the benefits of the upper-limb spasticity FDA approval in March occurred too late in the quarter to contribute to our sales results.

Outside the U.S., we enjoyed very strong double-digit increases across a wide range of countries, with surprisingly strong growth in several of the main European markets. These global markets are precisely where we are successfully dealing with multiple competitors.

It would therefore seem that the market is recovering as we can measure our market share with only a short time lag. In Europe, on the aesthetic side, we’re holding share at just under 80%, as we deal with the incursions of both Merck’s, with their Zymine and Bocatua [ph] brands and Galderma with Azzalure.

On the therapeutic side, it seems that most of ZMM’s market share gains have been at the expense of Dysport. In the U.S., BOTOX sales growth is less buoyant, as there was no base of Dysport sales in the prior year, but it is clear that the market is growing again.

We estimate that in the aesthetic market, Dysport had somewhere between 13% and 14% share in the first quarter. We'll be curious to see the lasting impact of the Dysport Love It or Leave It promotion after it terminates at the end of May.

In the therapeutic market, Dysport’s share is so far negligible, given the long history and experience of BOTOX use. In Europe and the U.S., we have recently introduced a 200-unit vial, which is useful for injectors treating large muscle groups, as well as for differentiation from competition. Regarding global market share for the fourth quarter, the last quarter for which data is available, we estimate that BOTOX held 79% share in a market growing 13% year-over-year.

Regarding the clinical program for BOTOX for chronic migraine, the clinical trial results of our PREEMPT program were published in Cephalalgia, the journal of the International Headache Society. Regarding facial aesthetics, we've experienced an even stronger rebound in sales than observed with BOTOX. Dermal filler sales grew year-over-year, a very strong 42.4% in dollars, and 34.5% in local currencies, with great growth in all operating regions of the world, with Europe again surprising on the upside.

Juvederm & Juvederm Ultra XC

In the U.S., we've seen huge growth in the JUVÉDERM line since the launch of JUVÉDERM Ultra XC, this is the lidocaine-containing product, in early February. Although we have gained some market share, it would seem that the market is responding strongly to the reduction in treatment pain experienced with this lidocaine-containing product and already a substantial share of the mix is attributable to JUVÉDERM Ultra XC.

We have just initiated print advertising for JUVÉDERM XC and have a PR campaign with TV host Dayna Devon, as our spokesperson to further drive growth. In Europe, we launched new additions to the JUVÉDERM product line, JUVÉDERM Smile at the IMCAS Conference in Paris in January and JUVÉDERM Hydrate at the Anti-Aging Conference in Monaco in March. JUVÉDERM Smile was also approved in South Africa, JUVÉDERM XC in Korea and JUVÉDERM Ultra Plus in Taiwan.

Voluma was recently launched in Brazil and also approved in Taiwan.

Based on our analysis of the world market in Q4, which we estimate grew 12%, it is clear that global market growth has accelerated since then. Our analysis also points to JUVÉDERM market share gains in all regions of the world. Beyond superior product performance characteristics, Allergan also benefits from having full product line.

At the end of the first quarter, Allergan's cash and cash net of debt positions totaled approximately $2 billion and $471 million, respectively. Allergan continued to maintain exceptional cash flow generation capabilities in the first quarter, with operating cash flow after capital expenditures of approximately $161 million, an increase of approximately $56 million over the first quarter of 2009.

Fake Botox: Houston physician sentenced

Posted: 12 May 2010 07:42 AM PDT

The fake Botox case in Houston comes to a close with this sentence handed down.

A Houston, Texas physician was sentenced to five months and 15 days in federal prison and three years of supervised release for injecting patients with fake Botox, prosecutors said on Friday.

Dr. Gayle Rothenberg is a local physician specialized in providing image enhancement services. She was also ordered to pay $98,426 in restitution to her affected patients. As a condition of supervised release, Rothenberg is prohibited from seeking reinstatement of her medical license.

Rothenberg and her former husband, Saul Gower, a local attorney, operated The Center for Image Enhancement located at 2000 Bering Drive in Houston.

Rothenberg ordered and administered a drug called Botulinum Toxin Type A that was labeled with the warning “FOR RESEARCH PURPOSES ONLY, NOT FOR HUMAN USE.” Despite this label, Rothenberg injected more than 170 patients with the substance and represented to patients that they were receiving Botox Cosmetic, manufactured by Allergan Inc.

Rothenberg also admitted that she advertised in brochures, magazines and websites that she specialized in treating facial wrinkles with Botox Cosmetic, even though she intentionally stopped ordering it due to the price increase in 2004 and began ordering the unapproved drug from a company named Toxin Research International because it was half the price of the other. She admitted that she did not tell her patients that they were receiving a different substance.

Gower pleaded guilty in 2008 to misbranding of a drug while being held for sale and making false statements to an agent. He then, cooperated with agents and testified against his ex-wife in exchange for a sentence of 4 years’ probation.

Are Some Doctors Selling Fake Botox To Their Patients?

The Houston physician, Dr. Gayle Rothenberg was sentenced to 5 ½ months in Federal prison last month for treating men and women with some counterfeited injectable never recognized by the Food and Drug Administration for use.

Apparently Rothenberg treated around one hundred seventy patients utilizing fake Botox. As per testimony, Rothenberg ceased using Botox Cosmetic following a new cost increase in January 04 and started off buying that bogus stuff that was fifty percent of the cost even though being aware it was not designed for human utilization .

In 2004, as a number of people became paralyzed at the hands of that phony junk, the FDA’s input has contributed to 31 arrests as well as 29 convictions of people marketing and advertising the false Botox. In addition to her prison sentence, former doctor Rothenberg will need to pay off more than $98,000 in restitution to clientele and may not reinstate her revoked Texas medical license.

The circumstance of Gayle Rothenberg is not any different than the example of Laurie D’Alleva, the other fine resident of Tx charged with selling fake Botox. Thus far this instance has yet to be prosecuted .

The prevalent similarities between the two are that both of these people appeared to be inspired by greed to risk individuals for economic gain. Laurie’s scenario is particularly intriguing to me based on opinions posted on Medical Spa MD. Here is an individual that appears to be deemed by her clientele as a “business person” who was performing “good service” for consumers which believed that Botox Cosmetic had been too expensive due to the fact greedy MDs were charging too much for their Botox. Even while Laurie seems to be viewed by many as some nurturing individual helping to make Botox reasonable to the public, public discourse about Dr. Rothenberg is somewhat the reverse. Responses such as “5-1/2 months? Justice is not only blind, it's stupid. (and maybe corrupt) “ and “That sentence is not even one day of confinement for every defrauded patient!.” I think the same option as the above several remarks, but precisely why is public sentiment different with these two con-artists? Could it be due to the fact one may be a MD and one is not?

On my own, I find it relatively unacceptable that the buying price of Botox has doubled since its introduction. I was really excited as soon as Dysport became available due to the fact I imagined that Dysport should be 50 percent the price and might drive the price of Botox downward so extra patients can afford it. Sadly, that hasn't been the situation. While MDs and medical spas must pay much more for Botox, and so do the clients. These kinds of raising prices allow persons like D’alleva and Dr. Rothenberg to find shady Botox they can buy at a more cost-effective price in order to create a larger profit while sacrificing patient safety. d’Alleva’s “botox” price was probably pennies on the dollar, while a doctor's cost for Botox can be now at $600 for each container.

Eventually a different business selling Botox may come along, secure Food and Drug Administration endorsement and push the price of Botox to a affordable price for physicians to be able to order for their patients. Till then, brace for more Laurie d’Allevas and Rothenberg’s to come along.

Effective Link Building Strategies to Increase Your Medical Spa's SEO

Posted: 15 Apr 2010 01:46 PM PDT

If you are new to "link building", it really isn't as hard as it seems.

Basically, link building is just a link from another website back to your own medical spa or laser clinic. The more back links your site has, the higher it will rank on the major search engines.

Link building can be very time consuming, but the FrontDesk SEO tool can really help you go out there and find the sites you should be listed on. This saves you a tremendous amount of time.

Because you will be resubmitting the same text over and over again, make yourself a document that you can keep all of your submission text on. This should include your Page Title, your website's URL address, a brief description of your practice, and important keywords. Website submissions also ask for a name of the submitter and email address. I would suggest setting up a email address with Google or Yahoo, one that you only use for submissions, this way your personal email won't become inundated with confirmation and/or spam emails as a result of your submissions.

View: 5 minute video introduction to linkbuilding and SEO

There are several types of link building methods you can do. Some are just basic data submissions, and some are blog and article submissions. I will describe the differences amongst the major link building methods:

Article Submission

There are directories on the web designed just for submitting articles and some for writing blogs. When you submit something you wrote about your practice or even a particular therapy you offer, you can attach hyperlinks to keywords in your article that direct the reader back to your website. Some quality sites are Squidoo, Hubpages, Blogger, and Wordpress.com. Let me show you how this works with just one line taken from a blog I wrote on my own blogpost:

"It's your body and you do have to be careful of who you choose to perform your laser lipo procedure. While no physician can have a 100% satisfaction rate, don't be afraid to ask questions about how long a physician has been performing these procedures, who they trained with, how many procedures do they perform a month, and also if they have any satisfied patients you can chat with. Also, it's important to ask to see a before and after photo book with their patients, and not someone else's."

By choosing a keyword you think your reader would be interested in, you can immediately direct them right to that page on your website with the hyperlinks.

Google considers a "Yahoo Directory" link as a quality back link. Unfortunately, they charge an annual fee of $300. It may be worth submitting to; however, there is no guarantee from Yahoo Directory that your site will be accepted.

Directory Submission

DMOZ is a directory worth submitting your site to. DMOZ is an Open Directory Project (ODP) mainly known as DMOZ which stands for "directory.mozilla.org" and is owned by Netscape. While DMOZ can substantially increase your SEO ranking, it's tough to receive their approval and the entire process could take months. If you are fortunate enough to receive their approval, many smaller directories use the DMOZ directory categories so if you can become listed with DMOZ this would mean you would also become listed on many other web directories as well.
There are other major directories you can submit to such as the BOTW (Best Of The Web) directory ($99/year or $299/permanent).

Social Bookmarking

Social bookmarking is changing in it's effectiveness all the time. In social bookmarking websites, users save links publicly (not personally on their own computers) to web pages that they want to store and/or share with others. Usually, these bookmarks are shared within an individual "group" someone may subscribe to (such as "Laser Hair Removal"). You can add descriptions to your bookmarks in the form of metadata, or meta tags, so that other users can understand what the content is of your bookmark without having to download it beforehand. Different types of "descriptions" can include comments or even reader's votes (favorable or not - like on YouTube or Digg). Again, FrontDesk SEO makes this process relatively easy.

Blog Commenting

MedicalSpaMD is a blog and, like most blogs, it is highly susceptible to spammers like we have all seen and Jeff so diligently tries to eliminate on a daily basis as it can be a true nuisance for people like us who use this site as a valuable tool for your practices.

If you want to find blogs to participate in and comment on, try to find quality blogs that are related to what you do as a profession. Again, FrontDesk SEO can help with this. And when you add your comments, try to make them content-relative because not only do your comments add value to the blogpost in general, they also have greater chance of staying on the blogpost with a link back to your website.

Press Releases

Press Releases have worked well for me, and I'm not too proud to say that I didn't write the ones that really worked. There are a lot of good and bad example press releases out there and I am no exception. Writing a quality press release is an art and, frankly, I don't have the talent for them and pay someone else to do it. Let me give you an example of my own good and bad press release experiences.

While this press release still continues to give my website hits, all it is is words: Paula's Bad Example

Now look at the one I paid Fran Acunzo from Acara Partners to do for us. It includes a photo, links and even video: Paula's Good Example

If writing a good press release including videos and back links is not your forte, then it's worth it to farm it out. Just writing a good press release is half the battle. Submitting it to the right press release agencies that will index it effectively for you is the other half.

Social Media Sites

Social Media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and YouTube work very well by providing quality and relevant back links to your site that all the major search engines love.

So, this is back linking in a nutshell and we can really go deeper into the categories, but I fear you will become bored or even glassy-eyed if you're not a geek like me. So if you don't have someone out there performing these activities for you and you really are serious about your web presence, you really might want to take a look at FrontDesk SEO and see what it can do for you. Just remember, building links doesn't increase your website's internet presence overnight. It does take some time, like my good friend Jeff keeps reminding me! In a world of available "instant results", it's hard to be patient sometimes!

Safer Plastic Surgery

Safeguards For Your Simple Cosmetic Medical Treatment

The days are gone when plastic surgery was only for the rich and famous as well as being something that you had to hide under the floor boards. Now, it’s appreciated and even in vogue to get plastic surgery. Individuals do it for many factors - to help feel good about themselves, to get rid of some form of medical problem, or just to shed weight expediently. What ever the reason why, it is critical for you to agree to common health and safety procedures since even though it’s cosmetic, any hazards are certainly not. So until you consent to alter your physical appearance, here is just what you need to do:

Locate a licensed surgeon: The most beneficial thing to consider in plastic surgery isn't the fee; it’s precisely how knowledgeable your surgeon is. You’re getting this since you would like to enhance your physical appearance, and it is solely having a highly regarded and proven physician that can you make sure that the outcomes are as anticipated. So even should you are required to fork out a lot more, pick a physician who is certified and capable to do aesthetic surgery as well as someone that has experience within the specific surgery that you're interested by.

Insist on a comfortable office: Cosmetic surgery is like every medical procedure in that you'll be under the effect of anesthesia and you'll go through blood loss. Consequently, just in case anything at all goes wrong, it is ideal to have your surgical treatments conducted at a hospital at which crisis care can be obtained over a 24x7 basis. But if the procedure will be scheduled at a private aesthetic surgical practice, find out about healthcare services which are near by and where you possibly can get urgent care .

Stick to guidelines: And finally, it is very important to stay within your doctor’s guidance before and following the treatment. You could have to stop smoking cigarettes and/or stop specific drugs (if you’re on prescription medications). Additionally, after the procedure is conducted, you might be in a reasonable amount of discomfort, but seek advice from your physician before you decide to commence taking painkillers by yourself. It may very well be a while before you begin witnessing benefits, notably with liposuction and other surgical treatments performed on the facial skin, so you must be patient. You may also be required to undertake physiotherapy in some cases, so check with a medical expert in order to give you all the information prior to deciding to sign on the dotted line.

It may very well be cosmetic, but the perils exist simply because it’s surgery in the end. But if you ever take on the essential safeguards plus stick to recommendations, there’s no need to worry about aesthetic surgery.

Outsource SEO Software

Search engine optimization is more than half the battle in marketing your website and getting the incremental traffic increases that come along with it.. search engine marketing expert organization (sempo) defines SEO as the process of editing a website's articles and code in order to improve awareness within one or a lot more search engines. different techniques are used by a website administrator to help increase their rankings in natural listings by making it 'easy' for search engines to be able to identify what the site's about, and decide how 'valuable' the content is to someone who's searching for information on that topic. SEO activities can also be divided into two broadly designated categories: on-site (SEO) and off-site (SEM).

Some of the modifications you'll want to look at using DIY SEO software might include:

 * Editing html titles, h1 tags, and information to include search phrases that describe your item or service to the search engine and its readers.
 * Writing keyword-rich meta data to truthfully reflect the material that is visible to the search engine and its readers.
 * Changing and optimizing your alt attribute tags for all of your images.
 * Including quality anchor text in you hyperlinks (anchortext is the words or phrases used to link to a page)
 * Editing site architecture or internal linking structure to raise usability for readers that enter through search engines.
 * Delete duplicate contentand check for broken links/page errors - duplicate content and crawling errors can affect your ability to rank well in search engines.
 * Creating a clean sitemap.

Off-site SEO (search engine marketing) includes activities outside of what occurs on your site to help boost your search engine rankings. these techniques typically take time and effort, and off-site SEO is an ongoing process. some of these search engine marketing activities include:

 * Distributing your sites feed to applicable no cost and compensated directories
 * Soliciting links from affiliated websites
 * Social book marks
 * Article and press release advertising and marketing
 * Promoting through social networks
 * Becoming an dynamic discussion board member
 * Commenting In different pertinent web sites (laser clinic or medical spa blogs if you're a plastic surgeon for example.)

You'll be executing a quite a bit of link building.

So,how does a search engine 'rank' a site and decide what order to list them in? essentially, links are the "currency" belonging to the web. each link acts as a 'vote' for a site, as far as the search engine sees it. now, it should be said right away that even more links doesn't necessarily equal better ranking. the reigning cliche here is "quality over quantity."

You'll hear a lot when it comes to search engine marketing and link building, but often keep in mind that it takes time. some things to aim for when building link popularity for SEM:

 * High pagerank
 * Sites/pages that are extremely applicable to your webpage or the page being linked to
 * Quality anchor text that is relevant and/or contains keywords
 * Few other links

Using this 'voting' system, there are Lots of ways to campaign for a vote, and you won't at all times have command over the niche sites that link to you, the anchor text used or where your hyperlink is placed. the best links reside on high pagerank sites and are surrounded by appropriate content, have few Hyperlinks on the web page and use appropriate anchor text. each search engine counts these types of 'votes' differently, and consequently, your position might never be identical from one search engine to another.

And that's not all. A link can have more value depending on the pagerank of a site, the number of links on that page, and whether or not the content is related. a link from ibm.com or amazon.com will carry much even more weight than some unknown site that doesn't have any 'authority'. 1 link among 5 will carry more heft than 1 link among 100. A link to a 'save the turtles' site from a blog post about the turtle life cycle will give more weight than the Identical hyperlink from a 'going green' blog.

What you should learn about website recognition in respect to outsource SEO search engine marketing is that more, higher quality links will begin to bring up your clout in the serps; thus giving you more coverage, greater traffic, more prospects and more revenue!

Internet Marketing & Your Laser Clinic

By Mai Black

Is click fraud costing your medical spa? If you're one of the tens of thousands of cosmetic medical practices, laser clinics and med spas advertising online with Google Adwords or Yahoo, don't be surprised to find that at least some of the money you're paying every month is sucked out of your marketing fund by click fraud.

The scam of "click fraud" began in the early days of the internet's popularity with software programs that automatically surfed Web sites to increase traffic figures. This led companies to develop policing technologies touted as antidotes to the problem. (Some marketing executives estimate that up to 20 percent of fees in certain advertising categories continue to be based on nonexistent consumers in today's search industry.)

Don't think it's already happening to your skin clinic, med spa or laser clinic? It is. Here's a quote from Michael Caruso, CEO of click fraud services vendor ClickFacts in an interview:

"In particularly fraud prone verticals such as finance, class action lawsuits and medical, we see click fraud rates in the 30 to 45 perecent range. These are all categories that see high keyword pricing in the auction model. That makes them particularly tasty for click fraud artists. If you can make more money from the dark side than the light side of search, there are plenty of people who will take advantage. Plus, it's not even technically illegal yet."

There are two ways that your skin clinics and medical spas marketing budget is losing to click fraud:

First: competitors who see your ad simply click on it, draining your advertising dollars. Second; click fraudsters set up 'affiliate' sites are set up that run your ads where they are clicked on by bots or employees. These sites are the most damaging since you're paying for every click without any return. Click fraud around skin clinics, med spas or laser clinics can be very lucrative since dermatology or plastic surgery clinics are becoming such a competitive market and the payment per click can be as high as $4-5.

Unfortunately, to keep your laser clinics budget safe you have very few tools. (Google just gave advertisers $90 million to compensate for click fraud as the result of a class action suit but you can bet they're not that Google's not interested in your individual account. Especially since they're making money from click fraud when your ads are clicked on.)

Start by limiting your skin clinics exposure. If your dermatology or plastic surgery clinic is still running an Adwords or Yahoo campaign, they allow you to limit the maximum amount you spend in a day. Take advantage of this feature by limiting your maximum cost to what you can afford to spend. You can also look for the tracks of click fraud by examining the reports you might have available to you. Multiple clicks coming from the same IP address are a sure sign of fraud.

Malaysia has become such a haven for click fraud 'sweat-shops' that clicks generated there are completely discounted and Malaysian accounts for Adwords or Overture are not granted.

If you're going to run ppc ads, protect your skin clinic, med spa or laser clinic. You can be sure that you're the only one trying to.

The Facts About Tummy Tucks

By Enrique Castillano

Is your stomach a trouble area? Is going on a diet and exercising not working at all to fix it? Were you formerly overweight and the weight loss resulted in excess skin? If any of this is true, then tummy tucks could be answer.

Tummy tucks are called an abdominoplasty in medical terms. It is a cosmetic surgical procedure that many people get so they can lose the excess skin or fat from the stomach. It is the only choice for people that were overweight and need the extra skin to be taken off completely.

Before you decide to have it done, be sure to check the history of the plastic surgeon. See the extent of the time they have been in practice and whether they have had lawsuits or complaints filed against them. Also, check out the details on their certification. It is important to check when picking out a surgeon because you will be trusting your life to them during surgery.

You must undergo a consultation before having it done. At this time, you will address questions such as the reason you want the surgery and what you expect out of it. All allergies and medical conditions must be disclosed to the surgeon along with information on any medications you are taking.

The procedure begins with anesthesia and then the incisions. After it is complete, the incisions will be closed. You will probably be put on medication after surgery while in recovery. Be aware there are risks involved that can occur after surgery. Some of them are scarring, bleeding, infection, blood clots, skin discolorations, swelling, asymmetry, loose skin, pain, and nerve damage.

So if tummy tucks are something you want to get, remember to be safe and do research. Any surgical procedure must be carefully thought about because there are risks. Do not rush the decision and be thoughtful.

Botax Part 2

I was just reading the text of the proposed changes to the Healthcare reform bill. Hidden in the middle of dozens of pages is this gem:

IN GENERAL.—There is hereby imposed on the sale of any taxable medical device by the manufacturer, producer, or importer a tax equal to 2.9 percent of the price for which so sold.

Well guess what, people - Mr. Obama & company may have backed off on the 10% cosmetic surgery tax, but he's still sticking it to you with a 2.9% tax on implants and surgical supplies.  It would also increase the cost of lasers, liposuction equipment, and many other surgical and anesthesia supplies we all use.

That's in addition to the additional 3.9% tax you'll be paying for any profit on investment income. So, if you invested and "saved your pennies" like an honest, hard-working American, you might be penalized up to 6.8% for having cosmetic surgery!

This tax also would apply to pacemakers, stents, heart valves, cataract lenses, artificial hip & knee implants, motorized wheelchairs, and implantable defibrillators. As if these things weren't expensive enough! It's the "Son-of-Bo-tax".

Sunscreens - Some Things You Need To Know About Them

By James Fraksburg

Sunscreens help protect your skin from the harmful UV rays of the sun. Excessive and unnecessary exposure to sunlight, especially between 10 am to 3 pm, can cause some untoward effects on your skin. Sunburn and premature skin aging are two of the most common. But a scarier effect than those is skin cancer. Now that alone should make you go scrambling for some protection.

Even when the sky is cloudy, or even during winter time, UV radiation can still reach your skin. While it's true that the amount is not as intense as during summer, still the skin may receive some damage. That's why you need to protect yourself from this radiation, even during brief exposure to the sun.

There are all sorts of sunscreens available nowadays. This is based upon which body part they'll be used on, or for what reason they'll be used for. Some come in forms of lotions and sprays suitable for application all over the body. But there are those that come in stick or salve form, for application on the lips, nose and around the eyes. There are also water- and sweat-resistant ones.

For sure you have often seen the word "SPF" on sunscreen products. Have you ever wondered what it is and what it stands for? SPF stands for "sun protection factor". It indicates the amount of protection it can give your skin from harmful UV radiation of the sun. A product may have SPF 15, 30 or 50. Basically, the higher the SPF of the sunscreen you apply, the more protection you have.

Skin experts suggest that you should start applying it on your skin about half an hour before going outside. This way, the substances that make the sunscreen work could set in and work efficiently. Also, to make the most out of the protection it gives, you should apply it liberally.

If you're staying outdoors for a long time during the day, reapplication is necessary. You should do so every 2 hours to maintain that you are getting protected all the time. Sweating and using hankies may rub off the sunscreen, thus diminishing its protective abilities. Even water-repellant ones need to be reapplied after some time.

Some people, however, may develop some form of skin irritation with use. If you have sensitive skin, you should first test the item you have bought before applying it. You do this by applying it on a small patch of your skin, then placing it under direct sunlight. If after some time redness, rash or itchiness occurs, it means you should go for a different brand.

Along with the application of sunscreen, there are also other means by which you can protect yourself from sunburn. Obviously, using an umbrella is one of them. You should also try to use shirts with long sleeves, and long pants or skirts especially when going out around noontime. For your face, use tinted sunglasses and wide-brimmed hats.

Do your skin a favor by applying sunscreens. You will not only protect your skin from getting burned or developing cancer. But also you will keep the early signs of aging at bay. Still, it's best if you can limit your exposure to the harmful UV rays of the sun by staying indoors whenever possible.

Using A Shower Filter Is A GreatMove

By Lyda W. Marin

In today's society, people need to take a step back and look at the way they are living, and make the right choices; there are so many pollutants that affect our well being. An inexpensive way to start would be to add a shower filter; this would help eliminate harsh chemicals and aid in the renewal of your hair and skin, and make you feel good in general.

Shower filters are economical, effortless to put in and not that complex to take care of. Besides removing harsh chemicals from the water, shower filters also lower shower grime and heavy metals, saving time spent cleaning, and the relaxing shower experience remains unchanged, because water pressure is not affected by most shower filters.

Using a shower filter is one of the best ways to reduce your body's exposure to dangerous chemicals such as chloroform, trichloroethylene (TCE), hydrogen sulfide, lead, and chlorine, which not only affect your skin and hair by drying them out and polluting them, but which cause other health issues as well. Certain toxins like chloriform can be extremely grave, causing liver and kidney damage. A offender of many effects, hydrogen sulfide has been known to cause headaches, irritated skin, nausea, and lowered blood pressure. Lead is a toxic chemical and chlorine can be rough on the body, the toxins in chlorine can lead to dehydration of the skin, lung problems, allergic reactions, and even cancer.

The more steam that you get while taking hot showers, makes it easier for your body to take in more chemicals and this process increases the higher the water temperature gets. Harmful chemicals move into your bloodstream from the vapors of a hot shower. The skin's pores also widen while showering, making chemical absorption through the skin a possibility. drinking regular tap water takes in less chlorine than taking a shower, a shower puts out about 25 gallons of water per use, by this you take in more chlorine in a single shower, than by drinking. You can take out these chemicals from further damaging your body, by adding a shower filter, making shower time more relaxing.

Besides the health aspect of it, adding a shower filter to make your water pure has an abundance of other benefits. Bladder, breast cancer, liver and kidney disease, and other health related issues, can be avoided if you by add a shower filter, because you take away the risk of toxic chemicals like chlorine, chloroform, TCE and hydrogen sulfide, from entering your bloodstream, as noted before. You can lessen your chance at asthma, bronchitis and other health related problems, by installing a shower filter, which will take out chlorine, chloroform and other hazardous materials, improving breathing. By adding a shower filter to your showerhead, you can reduce or totally eliminate all the dangerous chemicals that can attack the hair and skin, causing rashes, allergies and troublesome irritations, and allowing for your body's natural moistures to come back. Because of this, you may not need to use as many expensive products to maintain healthy skin and hair.

By choosing to install a shower filter you are reducing your family's risk of serious if not deadly health issues; it is a great idea to have one and the cost is little compared to your health and well- being. If you want the full relaxation of a clean shower with no worries, install a shower filter, it is cost efficient and helps lower the dangerous chemicals from doing damage to your skin and hair.

Concerns on Cell Phone Radiation and Cancer

By Byron Ash

There are at least over a hundred million people who have started using cell phones by the end of the 19th century. With this growing number, the number of cell sites and satellites to provide for the growing need of good reception has expanded at an enormous rate. But with this rapid growth in technology, serious matters regarding electromagnetic exposure and radiation are coming to light.

There was an issue a long time ago that popped up regarding a man who claimed that his wife developed brain tumor because of radio frequency being emitted by cell phones. Of course, there was no evidence to back up this far fetched claim. His wife's cell phone habits were not extraordinary, so the case was dropped two years after. But this started a wave of panic and hysteria. Were cell phones actually dangerous things that shouldn't be kept around? Was there truth to this cancer scare?

The concern over this hysteria is from the fact that cell phones emit RF or radio frequency waves, which are found between the area of FM radio waves and microwaves in the spectrum. The intensity will vary on the exposure time and from person to person, since location from base station can affect the frequency. The model also affects the amount, since newer models tend to emit a lesser degree of it.

People who live near or is in the range of a base station would be bombarded by radio waves and frequencies. Older modeled cell phones still emit larger quantities of these waves in comparison to newer models. But there is no link that can be found at all. Most brain tumor patients have had lower hours of cell use compared to normal people. There was no relation either as to which side of the brain was most frequently nearer a cell phone and where the tumor grew.

No study has ever given a clear link between cancer and cell phone radio frequencies. Though it is said that radiation can cause cancer, the amount it emits is not enough to cause panic. And the use of cell phones are something that causes more benefits than harm. Why would you want to throw away your cell phone for a half-baked truth about cancer?

Using Sunscreens Properly Can Fight Sun Damage

By James Fraksburg

Using baby oil and lying out in the sun with no protection is, hopefully, a thing of the past. There are many types of sunscreens available to make your time in the sun more safe.

Sunscreens were developed to provide sun protection. Both UVA and UVB rays from the sun can be dangerous. Although UVB ray damage is more noticeable because it causes a burn or rash, UVA rays can be just as damaging.

There are various forms for sun protection. Special creams, lotions, ointments, and waxes can help to fight sun damage. Different forms act better on certain skin areas. Any protection used should have an SPF(Sun Protection Factor) listed on the container. An SPF of at least thirty is recommended, and in some cases even a high number is needed. For protection from both UVA and UVB rays, a broad spectrum solution is available.

There are some guidelines to follow to make the use of the sun protectors more effective. Application should be done at least thirty minutes before exposure to the sun. You should reapply at least every two hours, and more often if you have been swimming, sweating, or drying yourself off. An ounce of product should be used for each application, and the application should be even. If not, some areas of skin might not be protected. Using self-tanners does not negate the need for applying sun protection. They do not have a high enough SPF to be effective.

Wrinkles are almost always caused by sun damage. Skin cancers can also occur over time with its damage. Using appropriate sun protection can help you to avoid these things.

Vitamin D is usually absorbed through the sun, so ways should be found to get this nutrient. Tanning beds are just as dangerous as direct sun light. A tan is really never safe unless you use a self-tanner.

Make sure your sun protection is still good. Check the container for its expiration date. Water, sand, and snow all reflect the rays of the sun, so do not forget your sun protection when exposed to these. Also, just because a day is cloudy, you can still suffer damage from the sun.

Using sunscreen will definitely help to prevent some of the damage from the sun. However, there are other things that you can do. Wearing UV sunglasses is a good way to help protect your eyes. Avoid being outside between 10 and 4 each day, as this is when the sun can cause the worst damage. Go to shady areas whenever possible. Use clothing to protect your skin. Some detergents now are made with formulas that can aid in sun protection. Even a big hat can give you some protection. For babies, it is not recommended to use topical sun protectors on a child less than six month old. Make sure they are kept in shady areas and are covered and protected as much as possible from the sun.

Sunscreens are an excellent defense in the battle against sun damage. Using them along with following some common sense guidelines can help to protect you and your family.

6. Ovarian Cyst Removal: Is Ovarian Cyst Surgery Generally Necessary?

By Justin Hutmacher

My girlfriend Emma emailed me lots of information on ovarian cyst removal using the United States government internet site I viewed Friday which means I uncovered way more about the ovaries than I seriously care to be familiar with though probably now I can in any case have an smart conversation the moment I see my doc again... My gyny was talking about potential ovarian cyst medical operation when the cyst would not vanish entirely untreated that is certainly not an option right now so I don't have any idea about what is happening.

Exactly what I figured out is this:

Women with a cyst on ovary should really solely go through ovarian cyst surgery if this sounds like a final solution to be cured. I am not talking about crisis surgical procedures when your life is endangered. If you have to decide upon ovarian cyst removal get ready, and additionally gather as much info as you can. It can be, actually incredibly expensive to have surgical procedure, but exactly what do you do when it is the final option.

In the case you have to face ovarian cyst surgery, don't be alarmed! Though, a lot of cysts may be addressed by just a change in food plan, using high potency vitamin supplements, or perhaps taking pills, there are going to be minimal occasions when ovarian cyst surgery is necessary. Holistic cysts on ovaries treatment plans that can be done from home are usually a feasible choice that every woman should check out prior to actually considering ovarian cyst removal or hormone pills.

Perhaps, you are facing a similar dilemma just as me, and you need to try to find an alternative, healthy treatment to ensure the cyst vanishes entirely, will you be interested to discover much more?

Mainstream medical methods are just what exactly the treatment of cysts is concerned rather restrained. In case your professional recommends surgical procedure, at all times get a another opinion. Always be up to date about the surgical procedure, and as well, find out exactly what is the procedure, in particular when there is the question involved whether or not to get rid of your uterus (hysterectomy), or your uterus plus your ovary, or ovaries. Hysterectomy is a very painful, as well as complex surgical treatment that will result in a lot of complications following the surgical intervention.

A proven way of removing your cyst is by laparoscopy, a minimal invasive surgery method. A tiny cut is made in close proximity to your navel, and the surgeon inserts a scope to remove the cyst. In the act the outer lining of the ovary is normally opened up also, the cyst is taken off the ovary just like extracting a clam from its shell. When the ovary remains to be in functioning condition, and also ovary material has not been impaired through the cyst, that operation method is termed a cystectomy as the ovary or ovaries remain functional. In case the ovary is destroyed, then this operating specialist eliminates also the impacted ovary which is called oophorectomy.

Another way to cut out cysts is actually by means of laparotomy that's a much greater abdominal cut and is particularly the effect of diagnosing of more substantial cysts and also ovarian malignant tumors. This does seem extremely nasty....gives me the shivers!

Since then, for different factors, laparoscopic operation while being pregnant has swiftly become more frequent as operating specialists became aware the safeness of the technique in general as well as while being pregnant. Having a baby is not any longer considered as a total contraindication regarding laparoscopic types of treatments.

Operative laparoscopy must be regarded to replace laparotomy in appropriate occurrences in pregnancy.

Give Yourself A Refreshing, Healthy Shower Through Shower Filters

By Susan D. Farrand

Every body is worried about the quality of our water, and we should be as concerned about the water we shower with as we are with the water we drink and the only way to feel safe is to use a shower filter.

Eliminating some of the most harmful chemicals in your water is the main reason you will want to ushave] a shower filter, but there are other benefits as well.

Why do we need a shower filter to begin with? Untreated water has many tiny organisms, some of which can be harmful to the general health of human beings. So governments put chlorine in the water to kill these microcosms. Adding chlorine to the water supply creates another set of problems, which have to be addressed, however.

Municipalities use chlorine to clean the water because it is a very cheap and effective way to kill the organisms. But chlorine, when combined with some of the organic matter in the water has the ability to create harmful byproducts, called known as chlorination byproducts. If you want to get rid of the danger of this harm do a shower filter comparison to find the best filter.

Some of the best chlorine filter showerheads will use Vitamin C shower filters rather than the stronger filters containing calcium sulfite or sulfate. Even the FDA uses Vitamin C to keep their laboratories sterile and free from contaminating toxins, and the same state of the art use is obtainable from your shower filter, Canada.

Vitashower is a shower filter that brings together all of these best features; an effective filtration system to eliminate chlorine, and the gentle benefit of Vitamin C to soften your water.

Siberian Chaga Used in Russia as Cancer Drug

By Dr. Markho Rafael

Siberian chaga mushroom appears as a black mass on birch trees, dead or alive. Occasionally, it may also be seen growing on hornbeam, ash, elm or beech.

In Europe and Asia, chaga has been used for centuries to treat cancers of the heart and liver, digestive ailments, and tuberculosis. [121]

The traditional use was to peel the black skin of the mushroom and then boil it into a tea. Being a compact and easily portable medicinal made it very valuable to healers throughout history.

Today's scientific focus on chaga extract is primarily as an anti-tumor remedy. In fact, it was approved in Russia as a cancer drug already in 1955, successfully used to treat cancers of the stomach, lungs, breasts and cervix. [122]

A modern study conducted in 1998 showed that chaga extract does indeed inhibit the growth of cervical cancer cells under laboratory conditions. [123] Another study from the mid-90's found the active compound betulin to cause growth inhibition and death of melanoma cells, also in lab. [124, 25]

Other research papers also confirm that some of the active compounds of chaga help retard the growth of cancer cells. [125, 126]

The black color of chaga is caused by betulin, a medicinally active compound that makes up 30% of the skin. [127] The lighter inside of the mushroom is rich in fungal lanostanes. So chaga tea may be more effective if made with the whole mushroom, including the skin.

The best chaga extracts are made not only from the whole mushroom fruit body but also the mycelia ("roots"), which contain more medically active protein compounds than the fruit bodies.

Other research has found chaga to possess powerful anti-viral properties. In 1996, two studies published results of inhibitory effects on both influenza virus [127] and HIV. [128] Considering the nature of viruses, the most likely scenario is that chaga works on viruses by enhancing the body's own immune system, a theory confirmed by a paper published in 2002 and another in 2005. [25, 129] The same mechanism may explain the reported anti-inflammatory effect of chaga. [130]

Furthermore, alcohol extract of chaga mushroom has been found to lower blood sugar levels. [131] Chaga also demonstrates significant antioxidant properties that help protect the genetic integrity of the cells. [132, 133]

As an interesting aside unrelated to human health, a Quebec arborist uses a chaga poultice to cure chestnut blight. The trees later even become immune to the blight and resistant to future infections. [134]

Why You Have To Always Have Sunscreens

By Jake Zertosky

Using sunscreen is an important part of a skin care regimen. It helps protect from the sun's dangerous ultra-violet (UV) rays and protect against sunburn. Sun damage can cause cancer and premature aging. There are a variety of different sunscreens on the market today.

UVA and UVB rays from the sun can cause cancer. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, with an estimated one million cases each year. UVR damages the skin's layers that give skin its supple and youthful appearance. Repeated sun exposure can also cause liver spots and aging spots.

An SPF of fifteen or more is your best bet for protecting against the sun's dangerous rays. Certain moisturizers and men's aftershave contain sunscreen and can be used for daily protection. Look around for different kind and see if you can get one that has sunscreen in it for the best protection.

Sun damage also causes wrinkles and sagging and advanced aging to the skin. It is under the layers of skin so cannot be seen and the damage is not known until well later on. The skin can look weathered and aged from too much sun.

Photoaging can cause wrinkles around the eyes and other skin related problems. Once sun damage has ravaged the skin it is very hard to reverse the damage. There are some laser surgeries and creams you can try but it's best to try not to have much damage in the first place.

Anyone over the age of six is recommended to wear sunscreen when going out in the sun. Children should not be exposed to the sun for too long. Overcast or not, the sun's rays still penetrate and are harmful. After water exposure and sweating the sunscreen should be reapplied.

If you like to tan and don't burn and still want to be in the sun yet tan, try to at least use a tanner that has sunscreen in it. This way you'll still get tan but the most harmful rays will be blocked. It just takes a little longer for the skin to tan with this applied. There are also self tanning sprays and lotions that don't leave the skin orange.

A self tanner will only dye the layer of skin on top and is totally low risk. The worst that can happen is a skin rash or reaction. Some self tanners even contain SPF, and these are the best to get, with an SPF of fifteen or more.

Some types of sunscreen have more protection than others do and others may be better at deflecting harmful UV rays. There are now some products that are said to give one hundred percent complete protection from the sun. Check labels and shop around before buying one to make sure you have the most protection.

Either way it's always smart to wear some type of sunblock, lotion or sunscreen in the sun before venturing out for prolonged exposure. Besides resisting sun damage your skin will look better in the long run. Be sure to always use sunscreen when on the beach, boat or swimming especially, and to reapply after activities to make sure you have maximum protection.
