Skin Cancer, Tannning Beds Exposed

By KMH

There is a lot of information floating around out there about the sun, skin cancer, and tanning beds. A lot of it is false and a whole lot of it is misunderstood half-truths. This article is intended to give you something to think about when considering tanning. Hopefully you will do your own research and make an educated decision that is best for you.

First of all, there are different types of skin cancer and some are not related to the sun at all. Since cancer boils down to a mutation of skin cells, many people are born with it or born with a pre-disposition. So if skin cancer runs in your family, it is extremely important to learn what type of skin cancer they have and what you can do to prevent in yourself.

Cancer is an abnormal mutation or growth at the cellular level in your body. These cells can be something you are born with. These cells can also be stimulated and/created by free radicals in your body.

So here is a very basic summary of skin cancer caused by the sun. The sun emits different types of UV rays. These UV rays can cause free radicals in your body. These free radicals can damage your skin (ie wrinkles, pigmentation, cancer). As you can see, the sun is a somewhat indirect cause of skin cancer.

So, hypothetically if you intervene at any point during this process you can prevent this type of cancer. If you do not expose yourself to any UV rays, there is no risk of absorbing them. If you wear high SPF sunblock, you can be exposed to the rays but prevent hem from being absorbed into your body. Lastly, you can attack the free radicals in your body.

Anti-oxidants are what fights free radicals in your body. They attach to the free radicals so that the O2 molecules will not attach to your good cells and mutate them. There are foods and vitamins that are considered anti-oxidants and can make a huge difference in preventing cancer.

Free radicals get into your body in other ways besides UV rays. Pollution and bad diets are also ways to get these free radicals. Free radicals also do a lot of damage to your body including many aging effects, degenerative diseases, and cancers.

This is clearly a very simple explanation of the indirect way that the sun ca cause skin cancer. However, I hope that you can do your own research and make an educated decision for yourself. I do believe that for some people it is possible to tan safely in a tanning bed and outdoors.

Ovarian cancer diagnosis info

By Tom Gidhinji

Women have many different organs that together are called the 'reproductive system'. Of these many organs, one of the most important in reproduction is the ovary, the organ that produces the egg which later can get fertilized. Because of its pivotal role in the body, the ovary is also a site of many important hormone productions, and can be considered important to many everyday processes. As such an active part of the female body, there are cells in the ovary that are constantly growing and maturing. Ovarian cancer is when there is a tumor in the ovary.

Being diagnosed with ovarian cancer is a distressing experience for any woman. As no one knows exactly why the cancer forms in the first place there is not much that can be done as preventive methods. Because of this reason it is important to stay alert about any warning signs of irregularities in your body's functions. As a main organ that deals with menstruation, it would be a good initiative to be vigilant about any differences in the monthly cycle.

As the ovary is involved with the menstrual cycle, being alert to any changes in the cycle would be a good way of identifying the disease early on. Ovarian cancer is not the reason every time there is some irregularity in the cycle, but consulting the doctor as soon as possible would mean you are ready for whatever the reason may be.

Sometimes the doctor may recommend surgically removing the affected ovary as that would stop the cancer from spreading to other parts of the body. Women need not be disheartened if diagnosed with ovarian cancer. There are a wide array of drugs prescribed by doctors which provide the needed hormones for the body to function as it always did. Also as there are two ovaries in every female, removing one ovary does not mean the end of children for any woman.

It is not easy to find out you have ovarian cancer, or any other kind of cancer. It takes a lot of courage to go through an experience like that, and so it is important to always surround yourself with positive people. Make sure the treatment that you take is something you are comfortable with and something recommended by your doctor. Last but not least never give up hope in yourself. You are stronger than you know!

The Mole Cancer Signs

By Matt Petigrew

Often times, one of the three melanoma skin cancers is from a mole, and melanoma is lethal if not treated early. It is important to know what your mole is and its condition because moles can be benign in nature or be abnormal which result to atypical moles and even melanoma.

You should constantly monitor your mole for changes. If you notice anything that is unnatural you should consult your doctor. Melanoma tends to be from your genetics so make sure you check your family history.

Moles should be checked often because even benign moles can cause cancer. Melanoma has been known to arise from the presence of other moles atypical, congenital, and even benign. So see your doctor if you have a mole.

A doctor or dermatologists will notice common signs of melanoma, such as change in growth of skin mole, like a sudden elevation of mole, a change in shape like development of irregular margins and borders, a change in size like enlargement of mole, a change in surface like scaly or oozing texture, or change in color like from darker one to red-white-blue color. Although most of melanoma are developed from existing moles and marked skin, other melanoma also grow in unmarked skin. Skin that is exposed to the UV rays of sunlight is generally the most affected.

If the skin mole is not detected earlier and has already developed into melanoma, you may experience some of the mole cancer signs such as bleeding of skin mole, painful mole, swelling of mole surface, thickening of skin under the mole surface, sudden weight loss, graying of skin, headaches, cough, and seizures. It may also affect the vital organs of the body if it is not treated immediately.

A skin mole can lead to cancer so make sure to get it checked out early. A lot of times teens and younger kids do not get their moles looked at so if this is the case make sure you talk to an adult or guardian and have them get it checked out. Consult a dermatologist and they will point you in the right direction.

Cosmetic Dermitology A La Carte.

By Karlen P Olsen

Even the Hollywood A-listers are moving away from invasive cosmetic surgery and turning to cosmetic dermatology for a less invasive skin rejuvenation alternative. By combining various treatment that would otherwise have been administered on their own, called "Comprehensive Therapy" or "Polytherapy," patients can get the look they want for less money, less pain, less planning and less downtime.

While the list of options isnt as long as the menu at your local juice bar, it does take a skille dermatologist to understand how to assemble the right combination of treatments for a patients' condition and desired result.

When it comes to skin rejuvenation, the stretched look is out. Facelifts may not even get rid of the folds that a patient seeks to correct, plus, no one wants the downtime and pain that comes with plastic surgery, not to mention the possibility of a poor outcome that would be permanent.

Thanks to the incredible advancement in lasers and other treatment options, medical dermatologists are able to combine methods to create the look that patients are seeking. Additionally, since polytherapy may give longer lasting effects, patients may not need to come in to the office as frequently as before. These procedures have very few associated risks, so making the decision to go ahead requires a minimal amount of deliberation.

For example, without pulling or cutting, the skin can be tightened and markedly rejuvenated using Genesis Plus, a combination of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and the Nd:YAG laser. The IPL treats the surface of the skin correcting pigmentation and tone, and the YAG stimulates the collagen for new growth, eliminating wrinkles and scars and making the skin more taut. Add to this some Restylane for fine lines around the eyes and perhaps some Botox, and you will look marvelous, young, and, most importantly, natural.

Advances in Polytherapy have opened up endless possibilities for cosmetic dermatologists. The newest and most exciting rejuvenation technique is known as PDT (photodynamic therapy). PDT is designed to achieve similar results to laser resurfacing but without the associated risks. a light sensitizing substance is applied to the skin, and then a laser or light source is passed over the areas to be treated.

Comprehensive therapy not only gives superior results but it can also prolong the effects of treatment. For example, using Botox or a filler substance alone may produce effects that last only three months. However, using the two together, in the frown lines for example, may sustain the effects for up to eight months!

Its rare that one type of treatment will produce the desired effect on its own. Thats why theres a trend toward polytherapy. However, only an experienced physician understands how to combine treatments to get the best results, and the importance of keeping abreast and offering the latest technology available.

How Antioxidants Help Prevent And Heal Cancer

By Rita Goldman

Our bodies produce natural antioxidants however the amount produced is not enough to combat the free radicals which in turn cause premature aging, damage to tissues, as well as the development of various diseases such as the life threatening cancer. Free radicals are known to be recurring by-products of natural cell formation. Their unstable molecular structure weakens the tissues surrounding them because they try to balance their structure by borrowing electrons from the nearby tissues.

When this happens, the weakened tissues become vulnerable to further damage from attacking bacteria and viruses. The abnormality in tissues will eventually develop into the known tumors and abnormal lumps, and will then progress to cancer if they are found to be malignant.

The only way to combat these free radicals is by taking in foods rich in antioxidants to help our body recuperate and prevent further damage caused by these harmful free radicals. If we have enough antioxidants in our body, free radicals wont be able to harm us, thus preventing cancer and other forms of diseases. If you have been diagnosed with cancer, antioxidants prevent any impeding new cancer cells from developing and spreading to other parts of your body. Because of this, the healing therapies you are currently undergoing will be more effective in treating your condition.

The rich sources of antioxidants include most vegetables and fruits. The vitamins A, C, and E are the most common antioxidants you can find in these healthy foods. You will also find the antioxidants beta-carotene, lutein, and lycopene in select few vegetables and fruits.

Some people may frown at the idea of eating fruits and vegetables everyday but statistics have proven that most people who consume at least five servings of fruits and vegetables each day have the lowest risk of developing cancer and also have the longest life span. Which would you prefer - eating your daily recommended servings of fruits and vegetables each day and looking forward to a long life ahead of you or suffering from the cancer illness?

Sunkissed tan without the health risk

By Jeff Cline

Summer is on its way! All the sun worshipers are getting ready to enjoy. With the sun comes the need for that sun kissed tan. Even though we love the wonderful tan, we also know what kind of damage it can do to our skin.

The days of sunworshipping has changed. The risks of sunbathing are well known by now. Skin cancer is the scariest risk. As many as 1/5 people will get skin cancer in there lifetime.

Sunless products are asafe alternative to baking in the sun. They have come a very long way since they first showed up on store shelves. No more orange! You can achieve a glow from gels, sprays and lotions.

Sunless tanners work by incorporating DHA or dihydroxyacetone to get that color. It attaches to the dead cells on the outer layer of skin. It last as long as the dead cells hold up. If used properly it can look very natural.

Some tanners have instant bronzers tinting the skin temporarly until full color is achieved. Most color can be seen after one hour, tanners typically go on clear. After 24 hours you will see full results.

Many salons have misting booths that can easily help you achieve an all over sunless glow. But the at home products work just as well if applied properly. Most of these tanners are applied to exposed areas.

Studies have not yet been done to see if the sunless tanners are safe. The FDA has approved them to be safe for skin application, but makes no note whether they are safe to ingest or inhale.

So it is best to take precautions just in case. Try not to inhale the fumes when using sprays and misting. And if you use misting use goggle and wipe off your lips afterwards. When applied to the face, watch around eyes, lips and nasal passages.

Patient Charting for Plastic Surgery Medical Spa Estheticians

Free downloads and more information for medical estheticians is available at Medical Spa MD, a fast growing community of Plastic Surgeons, Dermatologists and Aesthetic Physicians with 2,000+ Physician Members worldwide.
Estheticians coming from the traditional day spa industry into the medical spa environment have to learn and understand an entirely new way of documenting information as a 'client' transforms into a 'patient'. New Medical Aestheticians who in the past only needed to be able to simply stamp a time and date on treatment forms with occasional side notes, are now expected to correctly chart anything that happens during every patient interaction. In addition to patient charting comes new medical treatment consent forms, HIPPA Forms, photography consent forms, anatomical charting forms, and others. Medical Estheticians who have contact with a patient as any part of their treatment, should be charting everything from follow-up phone calls, to letters mailed, to topical treatments used and the patient's response, to laser settings and the patient's response, patch tests, follow up appointments, and patient's tolerances to therapies. The once client file has now transformed into a medical record by all standards which could stand up in a court of law. Some aestheticians I have spoken with have not learned the art of charting and feel they should not be required to do so. Why is it so important you ask? Unfortunately, there have been more horror stories hitting the media than stories of healing and hope, especially when it comes to therapies that involve lasers. These unfortunate circumstances are a catalyst of change to laser laws across the U.S. Whether the MD is on site or off, they (along with the therapist) can be held liable for any legal implications filed by a patient at the hands of a clinician or aesthetician. Harsh as it may seem, and it has even happened to our practice, even the most skilled and brilliant esthetician could be terminated if they refuse to properly chart and document a patient's care. The rule of thumb is just this... if you didn't chart it, it didn't happen. If you're a medical esthetician performing medical treatments it's up to you to know what your medical spas requirements are around patient charting and what potential problems exist if you fail to live up to these new requirements.

Plastic Surgery Marketing: 6 Ways To Use Real Patient Testimonials

Medical Spa Marketing: 6 Ways To Use Real Patient Testimonials Real patient testimonials for your medical spa, plastic surgery clinic, or cosmetic dermatology practice, third-party endorsements, media coverage these can all differentiate your cosmetic clinic, improve your professional image, and convince potential patients to initiate contact. While search engine optimization (SEO), pay per click (ppc) and direct mail can put your practice in front of potential patients, third party patient testimonials can provide the needed level of 'trust building'.. Medical spas, plastic surgeons, and cosmetic dermatologists usually utilize one of three types of third party validation: Existing Real Patient Testimonials: (You've seen this if you're not already doing it.) Prominent display of your patients saying nice things about you. Most of these are either not real, or they're anonymous, diminishing their effectiveness. Trust Through Association: The reason that you'll put your FACS, ASAPS, AAD, or ASDS logo on your site is to build patient trust. It works. Of course, these associations are completely restricted and very protective of their turf, leading to less restrictive medical associations who want to gain credibility. The reason MAPA was formed was to add some legitimacy to a group of non-core physicians. These associations are always pay to play. Third Party Endorsements & Validations: The Botox 'diamond level injector is an example of third party endorsement as are others that are run by medical service companies to try to help their customers. (If Medical Spa MD links to your site it's also a third party endorsement.) Interestingly, third party endorsements actually have a more favorable impact on the web than association endorsements since the third party is often more 'relevant' to the information that a potential patient is interested in. These kinds of accolades or promotions from prominent third-party players can be valuable, it validates your practice and provides a level of instant comfort that you've already been checked out by someone who knows. Small changes in the way you're handling your patient testimonials and third party endorsements can produce dramatic effects for your medical spa or cosmetic practice, especially online, where the vast majority of patients are now searching for information before first contact. Medical Spa MD: Quick strategies for piling up and using patient endorsements Target the places your patients already are: First and most importantly is your existing medical spa or cosmetic practice but you'll be able to reach far out into the community and gain the endorsements of other prominent businesses and individuals. Next, identify third-party recognition programs from high profile physician-respected sites like MedicalSpaMD.com. These are most often paid inclusion but there are ways to get these types of third party endorsements for free, or at a greatly reduced cost. Prepare good legal and media write-ups in advance: Media only runs two types of stories in cosmetic medicine; we found something that's fantastic and, we found out something we thought was fantastic, but now we found out that it doesn't work or it's dangerous. Uncover the ways you need to build these kinds of marketing materials so that you can use them on your own site. Provide ready-made strong human interest and strong visuals: Patients and the media love photos. If your fractional laser resurfacing before and after pictures suck, you're losing traffic and paying patients. Learn how to manage your photos and make them more than just snapshots. Make sure patient testimonials receive prominent placement: Have your patients smiling photo, real name, and a stellar testimonial. Beg, borrow or steal to get these. (Many patients won't want to be identified but some won't care. These are NOT in the before and after section.) Learn how to get patient testimonials that are truthful, candid, and impressive. Look for latent patient traffic, not spikes, from these techniques: The effective use of third party endorsements and patient testimonials work and drive patient flow, but it's not a technique that provides an instant boost. It's begins a trend and compounds over time.
Download your Free Report on Marketing Patient Testimonials For Plastic Surgeons at Medical Spa MD a growing association of Plastic Surgeons, Dermatologists and Aesthetic Physicians with more than 2,000 Physician Members worldwide.
If you're not yet using real patient testimonials and prominent third party endorsements to drive patient flow, start now, your medial spa, cosmetic dermatology clinic, or plastic surgery practice will thank you.

Acne Causes and Treatments

By Dan da Silva

Acne is an extremely prevalent skin condition affecting many people globally but does not just affect the young. In fact nearly 90 percent of people suffer from acne sometime in their lifetime and while acne is dreaded, it usually shows up during our teenage years and fortunately, many people outgrow it.

While the naturally occurring oil we produce called sebum does in fact clog the hair follicles, it is not the only substance to blame for the condition of acne and neither is oily skin either. The oil clogged inside the pore, not on the outside of the skin is what makes a pimple although acne is more of a contemporary problem and not a condition people in the past generally had to worry about.

Among the many causes of clogged pores are the use of makeup, everyday air particles and often a simple case of hormonal changes but while acne is a part of life for many individuals, it can be effectively treated. Many other factors contribute to the formation of acne and some debate that diet impacts the formation of acne, caused by reprocessed foods, junk foods, and sugars this contemporary society eats every day.

For a recurring or severe case of acne, many sufferers turn to a dermatologist for a more aggressive treatment and in most cases, a prescribed routine and medication can help to treat acne. Usually, follow-up visits will be necessary to that the acne is being cured without further intervention being required. The fingernails are the acne sufferer's biggest problem as bacteria can cause further infection of the already sensitive area so it is important that the acne is not aggravated any further.

This means that fingernails need to be kept clean and not dismissed because they look clean as almost all bacteria and germs are invisible to the naked human eye. To be on the safe side it is always wiser for an acne victim not to touch any of their pimples with their hands just in case.

As very few people have completely blemish free skin, there is a good chance that if you haven't had acne that you may well experience it at some stage especially if your parents suffered with it as well. The most likely scenario is that you will contact acne while you are young probably around puberty.

Acne can cause emotional problems for sufferers, especially when they are young so it is advisable that the opinion of a dermatologist be sought for further treatment. If you are unsure about you own situation then contact your local dermatologist of family physician as the information provided here is for guidance only and not a replacement for the opinion of a medical professional.
